Michael wrote:When I first became interested in Tamil and its culture, this was one of the first Tamil albums I downloaded. It's an album of devotional music, called Joti Vaḍivāna Aṇṇamalai, which I think is spelt ஜொதி வடிவான அண்ணமலை in Tamil. Could anyone tell me what the title means?
It's
Jōti Vaḍivāna Aṇṇāmalai ஜோதி வடிவான அண்
ணாமலை. See e.g.
here.
அண்ணாமலை is a hill in Tamil Nadu (in the Eastern Ghats) and a pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva. It's also used to refer to a famous Shiva temple on that hill. ஜோதி can mean
various things, including 'light' and 'star', but it can also mean 'God', and perhaps that's what it means here. So I guess it would mean something like "Annamalai in the form of God." I think the singer of that album might actually be from Palakkad in Kerala, just across the border from Tamil Nadu.
This is my favorite song in Tamil so far ("Kanni Magal" from the (unreleased?) movie
Kizhakku Pakkam Kathiru). The singer of this song is also from Kerala near the border with Tamil Nadu (in Thiruvananthapuram).
It's actually the first song I ever posted in this thread, but the link I posted doesn't work anymore, so here's another one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byPId1fKRSIThis is a Carnatic song called "Thandhai Thai Irundhal" by S. Sowmya, who is actually from Tamil Nadu.
I have an audiotape of her some of her songs starting with this one - or at least I used to but haven't found it in years, only the cover for the tape, so this is the first time I'm listening to this song in years because I just found this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym6INBDT_EoAnd here are some more '70s movie songs from Sri Lanka. Old Sri Lankan Tamil movies are pretty interesting; although they don't seem to have ever been nearly as popular as Indian Tamil movies even in Sri Lanka, they were made during the civil war but often with collaboration with Sinhalese artists. This one is "Anbil Malarntha Sontham" from
Anuragam, which I already found and posted two songs from (and the music director for this movie was Sinhalese):

Thendralum Puyalum, which I also posted a song from in my last post, called "Iyarkai Magal Ezhuthum Kavithaiyil" (sorry for the poor sound quality):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbEVduFzO1I"Sammathama Sollitharava" from
Komaligal (1976):
