OK, I was debating in my head whether to post this or not, and I decided to go ahead and do it with a cross-post to the Sinhalese music thread. :P

Sometime recently, I included a link to a YouTube video of an Indian (anti-Iraq War) political song. That song used the tune of this famous old movie song, "Surangini" from Avar Enakke Sontham (1977). The song is so famous it has its own Wikipedia article, and that article pointed out that it actually is a Tamil version of this Sinhalese song:

Yeah the song is Hindi/Urdu. But it's a nice song. TeenReef you should post it in the Hindi song thread.

Here's another Tamil song that used to be reeeeally popular back in the 70s (I think): "Adi Ennadi Rakkamma" from the movie Pattikada Pattanama. My parents introduced me to this song. :D I think we might even have a picture of my mom and her (female) friends dressing up like men while singing this song (either that, or I'm mixing up two completely different things). It also features Jayalalitha lol:

And here's a choir in the US that does a cover of "Balleilakka"; I think they sound pretty good, although my Tamil native friend tells me their pronunciation isn't the greatest. Either way, it's just cool to see!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8IK_Vve8ys#t=451

There's about a minute of them getting into the song, which includes some shifting of the singers.

Edit: So for some reason the embedding forces the video to be played from the beginning, even though I pasted the link starting at the correct time. Anyway, "Balleilakka" starts at 7:31.

I agree. To be honest, I took a choir class here in middle school, and they insisted on making us mispronounce any foreign languages their way, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened with this song. I'm guessing all the singers are required to pronounce it however the director thinks it should be pronounced, regardless of whether the singers themselves know better or not.

So this isn't a Youtube video but rather a pretty good radio station I recently discovered. It's based here in Toronto, Canada (it's actually in Scarborough, which is a borough of Toronto - think Manhattan or Queens in relation to New York City). They're called Vanakkam FM, and I listen to them through TuneIn here. You can also find their website here. I like them because they seem to play a mix of Kollywood songs and Tamil pop songs (I think I've even heard Tamil dance and rap). I also like them because they use SL Tamil for the ads and when the DJs speak. The SL accent is more familiar for me, although most Tamil resources teach the TN accent. But if you only know TN pronunciation, this could be a good way to hear some SL pronunciation!

TN Tamil is used in Sri Lanka as well,
in Central provinces and in the capital.

Really? Didn't know that - I always thought there were 3 main accents in SL Tamil - Colomban, Jaffnan, and East Coast (Batticaloan?)

You're welcome! I also found a good site for watching streaming Tamil shows, which I plan to post up as well.

OK, I'll admit I'm not 100% sure whether this song is in Tamil or not. It's from a Malayalam movie called Chithram (from my birth year!) that I used to watch over and over as a kid lol. It's called "Ey moonnu moonayilu." I think it's supposed to be in Tamil, although it's sung by the Malayalee actor Mohanlal, so the accent isn't quite right:

"Neela vaana odayil" is a song from the movie Vazhvey Maayam (1982), which was a remake of the Telugu movie Premabhishekam from the previous year. The only reason why I know this song is because Vazhvey Maayam was dubbed into Malayalam...as Premabhishekam ( ), and we happen to have the Malayalam version of this song on a cassette in our house. (In Malayalam, this song has the same title as in Tamil, except it's "cholayil" instead of "odayil" :P). As I was listening to this song, I was surprised to realize all of a sudden that the tune for the "ithazhkalil thenthuli enthidum painkili" part was one that stuck in my mind for years, even though when I first heard this song a few years ago for the first time in a long time, I didn't recognize it at all:

This is the Tamil song playing during the opening credits of the 2002 Indian English-language movie Mitr, My Friend (although I think this is from a version of that movie dubbed into some other language; I can't really tell which one based on the short sound bites in the clip), the first Indian movie (IIRC) to have an all-female crew. Both the director and the main actress are Malayalee, but the actress's character is Tamil whereas I think her husband is North Indian:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evC0HU7VdWw
Lyrics:

This is an old Sri Lankan Tamil movie song. It's apparently from a movie released on Oct. 27, 1978; I think the name may be Anuragam, and apparently, the guy who composed the music was Sinhalese. The song is called "Ennangalaale Iraivan Thaane":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a6a9qAwCzk
The lyrics go something like this:
