These two songs are by Gulnar Begum. She was a very famous Pashto singer. She sang mostly in Pashtun movies. She died in 1995.

Heard that song a few months ago, played it non-stop, and still am in love with it :)

Here's another song by Irfan Khan. It was his first hit single and launched his career. As the name suggests, it's an ode to the city of Peshawar.

And in this next video, an American student of Pashto sings the same song!

Earlier this summer I was in Pakistan for my cousin’s wedding. Wanting to take part in the festivities, my uncle’s mother-in-law (who is Pakhtun and originally from Peshawar) requested him to have the song, Bibi Sheerinay, played.

Bibi Sheerinay (Remix) - Zeek Afridi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_PaHXjdg4I

I heard the song and immediately loved it. It's been my favorite Pashto song for the past month :D

Did some research and got the following information from Zeek Afridi’s official site:

“It was a friend, Irfan Khan, who advised me to remix the older version of Bibi Sheerinay,” says Zeek, adding that he had no idea it would prove to be such a huge hit. With the song, the Pashto music market has scaled new heights. Zeek receives countless emails daily and scribbles autographs for an even larger number of fans mostly comprising school and college students. “Bibi Sheerinay is originally a wedding song most often sung by women. But a famous Afghan singer and music director Gul Zaman picked it up in the early 1960s and Khiyal Mohammad sang it for Peshawar radio in the ’70s. Since then it has remained popular among Pakhtun music buffs.”

A quick search on YouTube led me to the aforementioned version by music/cinema legend, Khyal Mohammad. He has quite the reputation and is widely regarded as the Elvis Presley of Pashto music.

It seems that Zeek Afridi’s version was so popular that he even made an Urdu version, which I also enjoy.

Over at the Persian forum, I came across an Afghan Dari song that I really liked. I soon found a Pashto version and I've been listening to both for the past few days.

Amele Pa Ghara Da (Pashto)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7YExfoSjiE

Amelaket Ba Gardan (Dari) - Jawid Sharif
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6VvxVDoss4

I've noticed that this and lot of Afghan songs are categorized as Qataghani. Can anyone explain what Qataghani is exactly? Google couldn't really help me, but I assume it's a type of folk music.

And if someone could provide a translation of the opening lines along with a summary of what the song's about, I would really appreciate it. :D

I asked that very same question around a year ago to one of our fellow unilangers and this was his answer :).

it's a kind of song, it has a specific kind of beat and melody, i'm not too sure how to describe it, so here are a few examples:

http://www.imeem.com/people/r7FKa2e/mus ... qataghani/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAex3w8-Wc0

the first two are more traditional, these two by valy are kinda 'modern'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wk0yMp1W-U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsrePXugEhw

he can't pronounce qataghan properly though, he says 'ghataghan' lol

I can't translate the song for you though :(
