Hey thanks for the links for Satyajit Ray's films! I'm a big fan. He's a great film maker.
His films have a very naturalistic feeling to them, like you were just watching someone's daily life. They're quite slow as well, but in a good way, I would definitely recommend them to anyone with an interest in world cinema & 'arthouse' films.
A lot of his films are available on DVD region 2, so if you live in region 2 DVD zones (Europe, Japan, South Africa, parts of the Middle East etc) or have region free DVD players then you can buy them quite reasonably on amazon.co.uk, and probably a lot of other sites.
The Apu trilogy is fantastic, and the 2 Satyajit Ray collection DVDs are great too, I'd especially recommend Charulata (from the collection vol 1 DVD).

Anyway, I might have gone a bit overboard with this post but I really do enjoy watching his films. Big recommendation to anyone learning Bengali or with an interest in world cinema.

Lately I've been on an Indo-Iranian bent, and I sort of want to learn Bengali because of its rich literary tradition and its importance in the history of linguistic rights (the Bengali language struggle is the reason for the UN's International Mother Language Day). I would love to read the works of Rabindranath Tagore in the original as well. I think it's a very underrated language. However, I probably won't be able to learn it because I can't get used to the eastern Nagari script.

If you can read devangari, you will have no problem with Bengali script! Its very phonetic and not very difficult. I really like Bengali for the reason, the lnaguage has the most modern literally tradtion compared to any other Indian lanaguge except maybe Tamil comes second for that. Bengali is also 5 or 6th most spoken lanaguge in the world, which was very surprising. Whne i startedlearning it, I thought it would be very different from Hindi and Persian, but there is a lot in common with Bengali. Bengali has no gender at all and the grammar is very regular (i think anyway) lol. It would be great for more people to learn this beautiful lanaguge!

How similar is it to Hindi and Urdu? I notice some words (like chãd - "moon") are the same but some are very different.

Hindi and Urdu are compleatly understanable on a conversation level. but things like news broadcasts are harder to understand. an urdu speaker would not understand pure hindi. urdu has more persian and arabic loanwords.

Oh sorry i read it wrong :P Its pretty similiar. Mostly the main different thing is grammar, some vocab and accent. for example instead of "sab" for all, in Bangla it would be "shob". Many words are different but to hard to figure ot. Like tumi is you instead of tum and aapni isntead of aap. I think bengali has more sanskritic words.
