AAPL Music Thread

Postby atalarikt » 2018-03-24, 10:13

It was not until recently that I noticed that this subforum did not have any music thread yet, so I decided to fix that.
Feel free to share any songs in Australian, Austronesian, and/or Papuan languages here. Bonus points (and perhaps cookies! :notme: ) if you specify lyrics and English translation!

I'll start with some Formosan/Taiwanese Aboriginal songs.

  • This is an old-time Amis/Pangcah love song, known as Malan Girl/Girl of Malan/Malan Romance. The singer is Usay Kawlu.

  • This is Abao (real name Aljenljeng Tjatjaljuvy), a Paiwan singer whose album, vavayan. (女人/Women), was titled the Best Album in Aboriginal Language in the 28th Golden Melody Awards, 2017. The song in this video is titled izuwa (/To Have/Own/Possess), which talks about the differences of Paiwan mothers in the past and present times.

  • And this is a Bunun singer/artist Biung Tak-Banuaz, titled Buklavu, first heard in his 2000 album 獵人 (The Hunter). He uses the Isbukun dialect of the Bunun language.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَانِكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْعَالِمِينَ۝
"And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge." (Ar-Rum: 22)

Jika saya salah, mohon diperbaiki. If I make some mistake(s), please correct me.

  • I don't know what is this song called, but it's sung by a band apparently called "Betel Nuts" (Google Translate spat out "Betelnut Brothers", so the best thing I can do is ask a native speaker. The song is in Amis.

Here are the lyrics and their Chinese translation (or transcription, I don't know).

  • From there, we logically get to this song, which is sung by the Komwa Komwa string band of the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea. It's in the Kilivila language ,which is an Austronesian language of the above-mentioned archipelago.

Here is the English translation of the original lyrics:

  • This song is in the Aroma dialect of the Keapara language spoken on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. It's called "Eau Mapara" (Iesu Vele Gaua is another song from the same band) and it's sung by a gospel group called "Servant Ministry".

I'll try to transcribe at least the first part of the lyrics.

Hello there, I am a speaker or kalo dialect of Keapara language and i'll try my best to transcribe the song for you.
the song is in aroma dialect so I can only understand a little bit because of tricky grammar(especially tenses) and word differences..

Lyrics in Aroma Dialect;

ia alimaparai ia aunilimalima, ia gera mauli nokovu veaina
eve lewalewani, ia aripani ia alimaparai ia ikani.

irauna palauna veairori kapunai, ia eve oru ao tharana,
gaurai walawalaku, pevaigaua palau gena, ula vuai.

goi e thau ia pe veika garonai, ia ari thaorai
ia noriripari, gaurai pe alamavumo gera mauli ai

osana osana aleluia, palau gena kupa vanuanai, pe verele, verelena, noai ikana.

Lyrics in my dialect ,Kalo dialect. (IPA symbols;'q','ts' and 'ʁ' are included to indicate correct pronunciation)

ita tanoparai ita taunilimalima, ita gera maguli nokovu vetaina
eve leqwaleqwana, ita taripana ita tanoparai _______?

irauna palaguna veagirori kapunai, ita eve ________?
ʁaurai walawalaku, pita vaiʁaoqa palagu gena, _____?.

ʁoi e au ita pita veika tomanai/garonai, ita ravai taaʁona
ita atsiripara, ʁaurai pita qalamavumo gera maguli ai

osana osana aleluia, palagu gena kupa vanuganai, pita verere, vererena, atsi ikana.
