Mga Awit - Tagalog Songs

Postby Riptide » 2014-06-30, 4:18

A while back, I had a thread for this. Now I want to bring it back. Please post any tagalog/pilipino songs you find (or any other filipino dialect for that matter)! I'm going to try to post songs with different genres to kind of give you all a taste of filipino music.

I was gonna say; "Oh! This is nice", but then the auto-tuned rap part started... :(

Haha, sorry. I'll try to not post songs with auto-tuned rap in the future. 8-)

Probably all the Tagalog songs I've ever heard so far other than "Bebot" are on SEAsite. Here's one of them, with a link to the SEAsite pages with the (MP3) recording and the lyrics. :P It's a popular romantic song called "Dito Ba?" This version is recorded by Ms. Christiane Davide Ong:

Lyrics: http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Taga ... htm#ditoba

Salamat sa iyo! :) To be honest, I usually find it hard to find Tagalog songs I like. I don't know whether this is true or not, but I kinda get the impression the Spanish destroyed everything in the repertoire of traditional Philippine music besides gong music. But these songs are pretty good. :D In fact, I think the first song in this thread is my favorite (not including the one I posted :P). :para:

Anyway, this is a very famous song that's a bit older than us (lol) called "Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie." I just remembered today that I'd heard of this song even though it's not on SEAsite. I learned about it from a National Geographic article on foreign workers in Dubai, where the author talks about a Filipina working there who introduces him to this song. It's a pretty sad song because it's about the difficult lives Filipinos in the Middle East lead, but I like the tune (the video includes the lyrics):

I posted "Bakya Mo, Neneng" earlier, but I think I'll just post it again because why the hell not. This video just has the audio, but the video description also has the lyrics. This is another song I found through SEAsite. :P

Like the last song I posted, this is also a song performed by Mabuhay Singers. It's called "Katakataka":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa8cNQwonh4
Lyrics (with video): http://tagaloglang.com/Filipino-Music/T ... rding.html

While I was looking for a song to post, I found a few more Tagalog folk songs with the lyrics in the video, too! :D So I figured I'd post those as well. One is a short song called "Sitsiritsit Alibangbang" that apparently dates back to the Spanish colonial period (see the video description for a bit more information):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjkrdy2A_HI
And the other is a folk song called "Ang Pipit" performed by Ivy Caroline and her mom, Anne:

Isn't that just an English song, and what's "sigang"?

This is another folk song called "Paru-Parong Bukid":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJK0ve_0xdI
And this is "Laging Tabi" by Epy Quizon and Bayani, the theme song from a 2009 Taiwanese movie by a Malaysian Chinese director about two workers from the Philippines(!) called Pinoy Sunday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0DJL_BwpDs
Ngumingiti ang araw
Humahalik ang hangin
Mga bituin ay kumikindat
Naglalambing ang buwan
Nagkakaron ng buhay
Napupuno ng kulay
Ang buong paligid ko
Pag nasa piling mo

Dinadalangin ko
Na laging tabi tayo
Mawalay man kahit kailan
Ika'y kasama ko
Pinapangarap ko
Na laging tabi tayo
Saan man dito sa mundo
Ika'y kasama ko

Kapag ako'y nalulungkot
Nag-iisa at nalulumbay
Larawan at ala-ala mo
Ang aking gabay
Malayo man ako sayo
Wala ng makapipigil
Sa mga panaginip ko
Ikaw ang kasabay
(Dinadalangin ko...)

Today, I'm posting four songs in Tagalog that are completely new to me. The first one is "Magsimula ka" by Leo Valdez. This is the song that is quoted here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sykbOCeRhmo
Lyrics: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/l/leo_ ... la_ka.html

This is another popular song called "Wakas" by Ms. Christiane Davide Ong, who also sang the version of "Dito Ba?" I posted: http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/them ... /wakas.mp3 (lyrics: http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Taga ... .htm#wakas)

This third song by Imago, performing a song by APO Hiking Society in the 70s, is called "Mahal Kita Hindi Ito Bola." It's a love song whose title means 'I love you; I'm not kidding', and apparently, it still plays on the radio in the Philippines a lot especially around Valentine's Day(?):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kulUV5or_wE
Lyrics: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/apo_ ... /ewan.html

And finally, this is a folk song by Sylvia La Torre called "Sa Libis Ng Ngayon" with the lyrics in the video itself. (There are other videos of this song performed by Mabuhay Singers, but I've already posted two of theirs, so I thought I'd try listening to one of their folk songs as sung by somebody else :P):

This is another song by Roel Cortez from 1985 called "Baleleng." Once again, as with "Napakasakit Kuya Eddie," the lyrics are in the subtitles, though sorry for the sudden jump at 2:01! I think this is a love song based on what I vaguely understood from (watching the video and :P) reading the lyrics without looking anything up. Apparently, there's also a "Visayan" version of this song by Max Surban; I'm guessing this means Cebuano:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPCKU-33V40
And this is "Sa Kabukiran," which apparently was originally a Spanish song but was translated first to Cebuano and then to Tagalog. This is the version sung by Sylvia La Torre in the 1940s with the lyrics and a translation into English. This version was apparently so popular a movie called Sa Kabukiran was made in 1947:

Here are two more traditional songs in Tagalog. One is called "Dalagang Pilipina" and, as I understand it, is basically an ode to Filipina women. I can't tell who the singers are exactly, but at least the lyrics are in the subtitles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmcTNaXDofo
And this one sung by Marco Sison is "Sapagkat Kami ay Tao Lamang," which apparently is about human imperfection and the power of love, even over God's will:
