Classical Greek Study Group

Yes, yet another study group! Yay! :P

Me and Vijay are working our way through Mastronarde's Introduction to Attic Greek (2nd edition), and in addition to wanting a place to post our questions and answers to exercises we figured we'd open up the offer to anyone who might want to join in.

So far I've gone (quickly) through Units 1 & 2, and have read through Unit 3. I've also done exercise 1 and an starting exercise 2 for Unit 3. I plan to post my answers later. (I also have the answer key, so I'll double check my answers at some point too.

I'm going to save exercise 5 for a day or two. I really should carefully read the sections on accentuation. :P
In the meantime, I'm going to check my answers to the exercises I have done, and continue on to Unit 4.

I did all the exercises. The only real mistakes I made were forgetting to use the psili at the beginning of the last word and not using the acute accent instead of the grave accent on every word with a word-final short accented vowel in Exercise 4. I also failed to notice that we're supposed to write the gender for each word in Exercise 2 until I started checking the answers, but then I just wrote them out and checked the rest of my answers. :P My translations in Exercise 3 are also a little different from the answer key.

Nobody likes unit 2? I'll do exercise 2 at least:
► Show Spoiler

Unit 3, exercise 1 (I decided to answer in German because all of us study or speak German, so maybe it's more useful than just posting again what someone else already posted, just with a different set of errors):
► Show Spoiler

Unit 3, exercise 2:
► Show Spoiler

I don't have the answer key, so if anybody likes to check, feel free. :)

I compared all three solutions for exercise 2 with each other. This is where yours differs from Vijay's and mine:
księżycowy wrote:1. ψήφοι
2. ποτέμου
9. θέε (?)
12. ἀνθρώπου
14. ὁδῷ
15. λογων
21. ἀδέλφοις
22. στρατήγοι
23. ἀνέμοι
24. στράτου
27. παίδιῳ

After correcting some mistakes in my solution, the difference between Vijay's and mine seems to be only typos:
vijayjohn wrote:8. ἤλιος, m.
21. αδελφοῖς, m.

Actually, comparing exercise 1 isn't that hard either.

I never put vocative plural as an option, Vijay did so, but only for masculine words, not for neuter. Other than that, we have differences in these words (again, only typos):

vijayjohn wrote:1. ἤλιον: acc. sg. of ἤλιος, ηλίου, m., sun
14. ὁδῶν: gen. pl. of ὁδόσ, ὁδοῦ, f., road
21. ἄδελφε: voc. sg. of αδελφός, αδελφοῦ, m., brother

And here also only typos (though you cheated with the genitive, the hard thing there was putting the accents in the right place ;) )
księżycowy wrote:16. dat. sing. of ἄνθρωτος, -ου masc. "man"
18. voc. sing. of ἅνεμος, -ου masc. "wind"

Yeah, I didn't get around to fixing my answers yet. Hopefully I'll do that later today.

I noticed I must have misread some of the forms asked for in Exercise 1. :P

We've had a good start! Cool!

Is making it through Unit 6 too much for this week? Say, by Saturday?

Three units in a single week? I was expecting more like one unit, or maybe two while it's still easy enough.

Nah, but seriously, if you would like to go at a slower pace that's fine. How about two Units a week for now?

You know, there really isn't any reason we all have to go at the same pace, is there? We're all working from the same resource, so there's enough comonality, isn't there?

Alternatively, I can hold off on posting my answers until the group is ready to work on them.

Pick your poison. :P
