Hard question, probably both: I need them because of my IE studies. I heard Avestan was close to Vedic; on the other hand, Middle Persian would help me understand some stuff in the Modern language.
I need Old Persian as well. So, I guess I'll let the obstacles and 'chance' decide where to start from.

If it's for IE studies, Avestan will be closer, but if it's also for modern Persian, Old Or Middle Persian is probably best as an intermediate one. They're all interesting.
