Português Arcaico - Galego-Português (Old Portuguese)

Postby NogueiraTrue » 2012-12-22, 20:35

"Galician-Portuguese (Portuguese: galego-português or galaico-português, Galician: galego-portugués or galaico-portugués), also known as Medieval Galician or Old Portuguese , was a West Iberian Romance language spoken in the Middle Ages, in the northwest area of the Iberian Peninsula.
It was first spoken in the area bounded in the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean and the Douro River in the south but it was later extended south of the Douro by the Reconquista. It is the common ancestor of modern Galician, Portuguese, Vernacular Brazilian (including varieties such as caipira, cupópia, portunhol da pampa and portunhol brasiguaio), Eonavian and Fala languages, and the extinct Judaeo-Portuguese language.
The term "Galician-Portuguese" also designates the subdivision of the modern West Iberian group which is composed by the aforementioned descendants of the extinct Galician-Portuguese language."

Is there someone interested on this language?

I find it beautiful when used in poetry, here is an example of a "Cantiga de Amor", a male voice lyric which a man pines for his beloved, a noble woman from the court:

Ai eu coitad! E por que vi
a dona que por meu mal vi!
Ca Deus lo sabe, poila vi,
nunca já mais prazer ar vi;
ca de quantas donas eu vi,
tam bõa dona nunca vi.

Tam comprida de todo bem,
per boa fé, esto sei bem,
se Nostro Senhor me dê bem
dela! Que eu quero gram bem,
per boa fé, nom por meu bem!
Ca pero que lh’eu quero bem,
non sabe ca lhe quero bem.

Ca lho nego pola veer,
pero nona posso veer!

Mais Deus, que mi a fezo veer,
rogu’eu que mi a faça veer;
e se mi a non fazer veer.
Sei bem que non posso veer
prazer nunca sem a veer.

Ca lhe quero melhor ca mim,
pero non o sabe per mim,
a que eu vi por mal de mi[m].

Nem outre já, mentr’ eu o sem
houver; mais s perder o sem,
dire[i]-o com mingua de sem;

Ca vedes que ouço dizer
que mingua de sem faz dizer
a home o que non quer dizer!

Ah I absolutely love this, as a Romance fanboy :lol: . This one and modern Portuguese and Galician must be my favourite Romance group.

Plus I'm very interested in medieval music so I've heard it, although I wouldn't be able to tell about the precision of the pronunciations one might end up listening to.

I would like to find prose texts in Old Portuguese, but by what I've read about, prose texts started to be written around the XV or XVI century.

If someone knows any prose work in Old Portuguese, please, post here. =)

I only know lyrical work.

Probably some existed, but I remember reading that they used specific languages depending on the "genre" so maybe that would at least partially explain the apparent lack of prose in medieval Galician.

If someone happens to know any sort of guide/grammar/explanation/vocabulary for this one, please tell me :? :D

I learned Modern Portuguese but I'm very interested in the Old one.
Could someone please tell me which are the main differences
in pronounciation, grammar, or vocabulary?

Levente, it was similar to Spanish in some ways: coração was coraçom (Galician uses this spelling without the nasal sound), the use of vós is stronger back then.(it's pretty much dead except for religious speech today)

The proclisis was used in the middle and end of sentences (like in spoken Brazilian Portuguese) -(me deixou instead of deixou-me) although the enclisis was used at the start (Amai-vos, Avisai-me).
The spelling looks more Latin (visíbil vs. visível now).
The pronunciation is considered to be more flowing like Brazilian Portuguese is too, in the modern Standard Portuguese (from Portugal) the vowels get shortened or dropped (except for Portenho/Nortenho).

A lot of this comes from reading Camões, by the way (i.e his magnum opus Os Luísadas).

Hi All,

I am involved in documenting an Portuguese Creole. Some of the vocabulary is archaic. Can someone guide me to an Old Portuguese reference source like a dictionary or some kind of repository(Portuguese to English) or if not available atleast (Old Portuguese to modern Portuguese).

Thanks and regard,
Alistair.

What do you mean exactly by "Old Portuguese"?

You'll find ancient and archaic words in a (good) regular monolingual Portuguese dictionary, we make no such distinction between Old and Modern Portuguese. Words used in 12th and 13th century medieval Galician-Portuguese poetry still show up in dictionaries, even if nobody has used them in hundreds of years (the spelling can be different, though)

Does anybody have access to Huber's "Altportugiesiches Elementarbuch" from 1933? This book is supposedly a gem for anyone learning Galego Arcaico, but is very hard to come by. Theoretically it is still in copyright, but in practice I don't think anyone would be offended by putting it on the Internet Archive for public use. I could even work on translating parts of it to make it more accessible.:)
