Hello.

I'm trying to find rock bands singing in Papiamentu, but couldn't find any yet. I found bands from many different music styles (some kinda similar to some Brazilian ones.. which I'm not very found of) so I'm wondering if anyone knows any rock bands from Curaçao, Aruba or Bonaire.

I have many aruban rocker friends. I'm sure they'll know if there are any rock bands that sing papiamento songs. I do not think that there any Curacao rock bands though much less Bonaire since rock isn't as big there as it is in Aruba. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything.

Well, I know a CD that has a Papiamentu song on it, Promo Bia (misspelled on the website catalog apparently)

Maybe aggressive rock music isn't as popular in Aruba. Myself, I have waited long for the seminal first Xhosa melodic death metal album, but nothing as of yet.

Yep. Actually, I did find some at MySpace, but all of them sang in English. Maybe they just think Papiamentu isn't suitable for their music (which'd be sad) or just want it to reach the bigger audience as possible.

It is sad actually. I couldn't find any. Among rockers in aruba it's cooler to sing in english. They do like hardcore rock like in the US. Rap however is in Papiamento. If you are interested I can look for some for you. But I don't know if you'll understand. There is lots of slang and double meanings or "doble sentido"

Latin music, hiphop, and some local genres are more popular on the islands than rock. It is easier to understand the lyrics of mellower forms anyway, if you are trying to use the music to reinforce your knowledge of the language. As a student of Papiamentu I like Ephrem J, Izaline Calister, Oswin Chin Behilia, and an a capella group called Serenada. You can buy some of this music on Amazon and find samples on YouTube. I sometimes post pointers to things like this in my "Papiamentu tur dia" blog.

Wonderful! One can dance zouk to it. I would really appreciate to see rock in Papiamentu too, but it's very nice to hear the African-based and Latin-based genres as well.
