Only two languages have any official status in Paraguay, namely Spanish and Paraguayan Guarani. Even Plautdietsch, widely spoken near the center of Paraguay, is not officially recognized, nor are any of the various other varieties of Guarani spoken in the country. Two of them are spoken near or within Plautdietsch-speaking territory; one of these is also spoken more widely near the Bolivian border. A few more are spoken near the eastern border with Brazil.
Also spoken in Paraguay are two Zamucoan languages near the border with Bolivia and Brazil, two Matacoan languages and one Guaicuruan language near the Argentine border, and the Mascoian languages in and to the east of the Plautdietsch-speaking territory.
