Languages of Eastern Mexico

Postby vijayjohn » 2021-11-13, 14:30

A wide variety of languages is spoken to the north and east of Oaxaca. They include languages from the Mayan, Mixe-Zoquean, Otomanguean, and Uto-Aztecan language families. The Otomanguean languages spoken to the north of Oaxaca include some varieties of Mazatec and Chinantec. The Mayan languages spoken east of Oaxaca include, most prominently, Yucatec Maya, but also several other languages, some of which are also spoken across the border in Guatemala such as Chuj, Q'anjob'al, Jakaltek, and Mam.

The other Mayan language straddling the border is Tectitec. The remaining Mayan languages are Tabasco Chontal in Tabasco and Ch'ol, Lacandon, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Tojolab'al, and Mocho' in Chiapas.

Mixe-Zoquean languages are spoken in Veracruz, Tabasco, and Chiapas as well as Oaxaca. In particular, four Mixe-Zoquean branch are spoken in Veracruz, next to the Isthmus Nahuatl dialect cluster. The one spoken furthest to the south is a Mixean language called Sayultec, and another spoken next to it is Olutec. A Zoquean language called Texistepec is also spoken next to Olutec. Cosoleacaque is next to Texistepec, and a variety of Isthmus Nahuatl is spoken there. The other varieties are spoken just to the north in Mecayapan and Pajapan. Finally, Sierra Popoluca is another Zoquean language spoken just to the west of Mecayapan.

Tabasco Zoque is spoken just west of Tabasco Chontal. The other Zoquean languages are part of the Chiapas Zoque group in Chiapas. Two spoken to the west of the other Mayan languages (besides Tabasco Chontal) are Copainalá Zoque and Rayón Zoque. The remaining Zoque language is Francisco León Zoque, which is widely spoken throughout Chiapas.
