It is! This was my response to that:

Or "the K'iche' language is beautiful?"
I think your sentence and the meaning were correct. The discussion after that was unrelated, I was just asking about the word "kab'an" (seems to mean "does") as a separate question.

Great! I have it too. To be honest, I think I may like it better than the online lessons. But I haven't done any lessons from it yet; I've done some from the online course and I've also been going through the lessons on pages 184-203 of Texto básico del curso del idioma K'iche', which are a nice short intro with some exercises (just greetings, pronouns, possessors, occupations and some vocab).
I think the main advantage to the online Chqeta'maj le qach'ab'al K'iche' course is the audio, and the fact that it is online so that anyone can participate in discussing it without having to purchase anything to follow along.

Exactly.

I like the textbook too, but it's very focused on grammar. Go figure. :P

the audio has the western dialect thing of changing some final consonants to affricates but I suppose there's no need to do that if you're not sure about what your doing (also I'm going to stick with the ten vowel system  )

Is it true that la/le are Spanish loans? I don't remember where I read that. It seems weird to me.

Na weta’m taj. I haven't heard that, but it could be true. I don't even know where to look to find K'iche' etymologies. I do know that other Maya languages have related words like lela', lelo' and loo' which are supposedly related to the K'iche' words, but whether or not they all also originate from Spanish, I don't know.

I am looking at the possessive forms in Tïjonïk 4 and thought that I would post some of the exercises here. My response is hidden, for anyone who wants to do it on their own before looking at my answers. Also, I'm posting only the first six. The others (if someone else would like to post them) are ulew, b'aq, wuj, tïjonïk, and tzib'ab'al. (Not that we need to post everything.)

I think a Mayanist (i.e. a linguist working on Mayan languages) once told me that they aren't and that the similarity to Spanish is coincidental. (This probably isn't the only thing where I've been told that, either!).

I'm going to try to do all the nouns in Tïjonïk 4. :partyhat: I'm being lazy and just using the spellings on the website, though, since I have no idea how things are really supposed to be spelled. :silly:

I think we're each wrong on different things (and, in a couple of cases, maybe both right and just saying the same thing in different ways). My comments on our Unit 5 answers and their differences (hidden in spoiler tags, in case someone else wants to try before seeing this):

I have no idea about which word orders are acceptable, either, although I thought VSO (VOS?) was supposed to be the default or something? So I tried to just follow the word order used in the lessons. :P

Also, I just used the question marks to indicate sentences where I was especially unsure while trying to formulate them, before looking at your answers. :)

EDIT: Oh, and for #9, actually, I wrote what I wrote in black before looking at your answers and correcting myself.

I just started going through Tijonik 6, and I see that they say that the pronoun has to come before k'o in a locative sentence. So I think maybe we were both wrong for #10, but we couldn't have possibly known that yet...same with #9.

Hello everyone. I apologize for such a late reply. I just came across this thread recently.

First of all, this thread is amazing because of all the resources provided for K'iche'! I've got a lot of work to do!

But most importantly, the online course is actually intended to be used in a classroom setting. I got into contact with the people who worked on the project and that's what I was told. UT Austin actually has a K'iche' course and this was presumably developed just for that purpose. In fact, I was told that I needed a K'iche' teacher or at least a native speaker to properly use the website :( .

It does suck that the course isn't completely comprehensive, but it's still a nice resource, especially for audio.
