Algic Languages Study Group

Postby vijayjohn » 2018-06-20, 6:18

This thread is for a study group involving any of the Algic languages. I decided to make this a family-wide study group because I'm learning both Lnuismk/Micmac and Michif myself. Michif is technically a mixed language, not Algic itself, but the new vocabulary in it for me is overwhelmingly of Cree origin, so it's helping me make inroads into Cree (which is Algic!).

Anyway, anyone who wants to learn an Algic language is welcome here, and all the better if you're interested in learning some Lnuismk and/or Michif with me! Please note that I am not using a textbook for either language but am using or have used online lessons for both.

For Lnuismk, this initially consisted of these lessons...okay, those are lessons. :P But they're already available for free online! Now that I've gone through all of them (and keep trying to review the vocab), I've moved on to using some YouTube videos, a wiki for the language, and generally whatever else I can find. For Michif, I'm mainly using learnmichif.com.

Did you make a group in the end? I think I'm interested in this, mostly Cree and Ojibwe I guess.

(I've also looked up a bit of Iroquoian and Siuan because even though I've been aware of Na-Dene and Algic for years everything else was a mystery to me)

YAY, someone's interested! :whoo: Yeah, you're the first person to actually express much interest. I mean, I'm sure księżycowy would be interested in doing an Algic language or two eventually, but I don't think it's high on his list of priority languages atm. :P

Now that I think about it, Mikmaq would be nice too. I have a teaching grammar pdf that ended up on my hard drive somehow through hoarding stuff over time.

I have the same text. I have been tempted to join in, I'd be interested in learning some Mikmaq myself.

Maybe in a few months.

And just to warn you ahead of time, the spelling system used in the teaching grammar is a bit different than the current system.

I actually made a list that included all of Cree, all of Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Mikmaq and Arapaho, and I'm probably preferring Cree, although for no particular reason, and the dialectal variation is confusing to me

(I didn't say anything in the Iroquoian group because I don't have a clue about those :para: )

Cree is a cool option for sure. And there are some pretty good resources for it too.

Are you interested in joining in? :o

What? Defecting to the enemy?

Actually I probably would but I lack motivation/context about those and I get anxiety about wanting to do too many things

In that case Mohawk would be nice.

It's the language around Montreal, right? (I am VERY confused about North American geography, I find myself reading references to places all of the time that I can't locate in relation to each other  )

Before colonization it was spoken around the Hudson River in New York State. After colonization, it's mostly in Ontario and New York state, but yes I think there are a few Mohawk tribes in Quebec.

Omg both of you are talking about either languages I'm doing or ones that are very closely connected in some way to the ones I'm doing! :D

Well, in the end those are areas that I would really like to visit somehow, although I can't see that happening very easily

If you ever do visit, maybe we should do a North American UniLang meetup!

So, are we starting a Mohawk study group (using the Iroquoian study thread), or not? :P

If they're like Algonquian languages I'll probably like them.

I wonder which of Eastern Algonquian has the most resources in general.
