Iroquoian Study Group

Postby vijayjohn » 2018-06-20, 6:11

Starting it because I couldn't wait for our beloved moderator to start it. :P

This thread is for a Seneca study group. We will presumably be using the materials so generously provided on http://senecalanguage.com/ to learn some Seneca. I presume anyone is welcome to join. I'll let księżycowy do the honors of providing us with more details! :D

EDIT by księżycowy:
I'm going to post any assignments here while there is an active study group for any of the Iroquioan languages. The most recent study group and/or assignment will always be on top. Please note all dates will be in the following format: month/day/year.

Cayuga Group (Started 10/25/18)

Material(s):
  • Wadewayęstanih: A Cayuga Teaching Grammar by Mithun and Henry
  • Cayuga Spelling Manual Website

Assignments:
  • Remaining subsections under 'Accent Placement and Vowel Length' in Spelling Manual. Due 11/11/18
  • 'Syllables' and the first three subsections under 'Accent Placement and Vowel Length' in Spelling Manual. Due 11/05/18
  • All subsections in the 'Cayuga Letters' section of the Spelling Manual. Due 10/28/18

EDIT2 by księżycowy:
I'm putting my disclaimer about shared materials front and center.

Regarding shared materials for the group:
I take copyright laws serious, and will not have myself or this forum dragged into legal troubles over materials. That being said - I am willing to distribute materials not freely and legally accessible online to members of the forum in good standing and who do not have the means to purchase said materials themselves (for whatever reason). I am only doing this for the purposes of a group study of the language, and so that all members of the group have the materials being used. Please do not distribute these materials outside of the group or it may ruin the fun for everyone else. If you wish to get a copy of these scans please PM me and we can discuss it.Access to these materials will be taken down immediately upon the request of the author or publisher of the materials or the administrative team of this forum.

Wow, you actually created this.....

Well, I guess we might as well make some use out of this thread. :P

And yes, anyone can join at anytime. And I could see this broadening to a general Iroquoian study thread. In fact, we could start with some Cayuga, Mohawk, or Oneida to start if anyone would rather. (My personal preference being for Cayuga or Mohawk, if not Seneca.)

Anyway, if we're starting with Seneca, we can go through the Seneca Language Supplement lessons, pulling grammar and vocabulary from the other various resources.

Wait, isn't Seneca what you've been studying most recently, though? And what you've been talking about all this time?

Yes. But since there's very little to go through as far as lessons for Seneca.... :P

In that case, would you prefer for me to change the name of this thread, perhaps to "Iroquoian languages study group" so it's not Seneca-specific?

I changed it for you. :)

So, what would you like to go through?
It's not like we can't go through some Seneca stuff, but I'm open to anything.

Sure. We can do the Seneca Language Supplement lessons (which I suggested before :P ) for a start.

Oh OK, then I guess we can just start with the language supplement. Maybe I can do the other ones at the same time since there are only three of them. :P

The language supplement is rather short too, but at least it has a lot more lessons. :P

I kinda feel like Seneca is a bit hard to DIY, given the state of materials for it. What do you think?

I propose one of the following: Stick with Seneca, but you take the lead on what we cover (cause you're more versed in learning languages without textbooks), or we switch to a language that has a textbook (my recommendations are Mohawk or Cayuga).

I also think, if we go with a language that doesn't have exercises, we make up our own.

And have you gone over any lessons from the supplement yet? To be honest, I haven't. :P

Wait, so what are you doing for Seneca these days now? :hmm: Or are you doing anything? That's kinda why I haven't been doing anything.

Mostly attending the community class and haphazardly going through the Quizlet deck. :P
