I meant resources beyond beginner level for any of those in general.

So, you mean intermediate lessons or something, right?

Yes. But I think the only North American language that I've seen has something like that is (I think) Navajo.

Off the top of my head I can think of quite a few that have textbooks beyond the beginner stage. But sadly, none of them are Iroquoian languages.

I'm sure there's always alternatives.

(For example with regards to studying art/illustration/sculpture/etc I came to the conclusion that in the worst of cases I'll just try to find a job and pay someone for classes  There's always people who'll say yes to that)

Some Iroquois tribes offer language classes, which I assume go beyond the beginning stage. But I'm not sure how many of them do so online (like the Seneca tribe does  ). Couldn't hurt to ask.

I think as of now I'm amused by the amount of person/number/gender combinations to conjugate verbs

Yeah, that's probably one of the most complex parts of the languages in this family.

Sgë:nö'. Dë'ëh nis šya:söh?

Actually, where as I'd like to still do this, I do think it's a bit unreasonable for us to converse in a fast enough way to make this workable, so let's just trade off writing up dialogues/stories and have the other person translate. :P

A: Sgë:nö’. Dë’ëh ni:s šya:söh?
B: Sgë:nö’. Terry ni:’ gya:söh.
A: Jerry ni:s šya:söh?
B: Hë’ëh, Jerry (ni:’) de’gya:söh! Terry ni:’ gya:söh!
A: Tom ni:’ gya:söh. Sadögweta’?
B: Gadögweta’. I:s koh? (i:s = ni:s)
A: De’gadögweta’. Aknö’ë:gö’s.

A: Hi. What's your name?/What are you called?
B: Hi. My name's Terry./I am called Terry.
A: Your name's/You're called Jerry?
B: No, my name isn't/I'm not called Jerry! My name's/I'm called Terry!
A: My name's/I'm called Tom. How are you?
B: I'm well. And you?
A: I'm not well. I have a headache.

Maybe I'll try making a dialogue, too?

A: Ónëhjih tgögë́:nö'.
B: Do:gës, gë' heh ögö́'esha' sagö:gë' ae'.
A: Sadögweta’?
B: Sgadögweta’.
A: A:gajö:gwah næ:h.
B: Ësgö:gë'.

Cool, that was the idea! I'll try translating it tomorrow.

Would it be terribly inconvenient of me to ask you, Vijay, to only use grammar found in the community class notes?

Vocabulary is fine to branch out from, but not so much grammar.

Pretty sure I only used vocabulary from the Pearl White lessons :)

Yes, but I said the grammar was the issue. I'm not using the Pearl White lessons, so.....

Wait, but what are the community class notes? These? But is it possible to figure out aknö’ë:gö’s from that? :hmm:

Okay. I'm still puzzled, though; how did you manage to use that to produce the word aknö’ë:gö’s? Is the grammar for that included in these community lessons? :hmm:

Also, would you like me to come up with a new dialogue and translate the one I wrote out yesterday? I'm not sure it's possible to reword the dialogue using what's in the community lessons.

I'm confused as to were aknö’ë:gö’s is coming from to begin with. I didn't write it in my dialogue. :hmm:

EDIT: Oh, wait, yes I did. Dur. :P

It was in one of the older versions of the community notes. I'll have to check to be sure, but I believe it means "I have a headache."

As for the second part, yes please. :)

Okay, so here's the translation!

A: It's a long time since I saw you.
B: That's right, I'm really glad to see you again.
A: How are you doing?
B: I'm well again.
A: I hope so.
B: I'll see you again.

And here's a new dialogue! :)

A: Do:h nigano:ö'?
B: Gano:ö'.
A: Do:h nisa:wisda:yë'?
B: Dewagaja'gi:h! Ogwe:nyö:h ëgata'dö:h degagwënishä:ge:h?
A: ...Waje:sëh.
B: Dasgöh!

Ok, so after some inactivity, me and Vijay have decided to go through Wadewayę́stanih: A Cayuga Teaching Grammar by Mithun & Henry.

For starters, since the phonology is a bit more complex for Cayuga as opposed to Seneca, I though it might be helpful to go through the Spelling Manual here (which is equivalent to Chapter 2 in the textbook) to start with.

I'll scan in the lessons in the book as we go through the book.

As this is copyrighted material, and available for sale on Amazon at what I consider a reasonable price, I will not make these scans freely available. I will only distribute them to members of the forum in good standing and who do not have the means to purchase the book themselves. I am only doing this for the purposes of a group study of the language, and so that all members of the group have the materials being used. Please do not distribute these materials outside of the group or it may ruin the fun for everyone else. If you wish to get a copy of these scans please PM me and we can discuss it.

Ok, with that disclaimer out of the way, I hope I haven't scared anyone. This group is still open to anyone, and I hope everyone interested will join in. :)

First Assignment:
All subsections in the 'Cayuga Letters' section of the Spelling Manual. Due 10/28
