Iroquoian Study Group

Postby vijayjohn » 2018-06-20, 6:11

Starting it because I couldn't wait for our beloved moderator to start it. :P

This thread is for a Seneca study group. We will presumably be using the materials so generously provided on http://senecalanguage.com/ to learn some Seneca. I presume anyone is welcome to join. I'll let księżycowy do the honors of providing us with more details! :D

Wow, you actually created this.....

Well, I guess we might as well make some use out of this thread. :P

And yes, anyone can join at anytime. And I could see this broadening to a general Iroquoian study thread. In fact, we could start with some Cayuga, Mohawk, or Oneida to start if anyone would rather. (My personal preference being for Cayuga or Mohawk, if not Seneca.)

Anyway, if we're starting with Seneca, we can go through the Seneca Language Supplement lessons, pulling grammar and vocabulary from the other various resources.

Wait, isn't Seneca what you've been studying most recently, though? And what you've been talking about all this time?

Yes. But since there's very little to go through as far as lessons for Seneca.... :P

In that case, would you prefer for me to change the name of this thread, perhaps to "Iroquoian languages study group" so it's not Seneca-specific?

I changed it for you. :)

So, what would you like to go through?
It's not like we can't go through some Seneca stuff, but I'm open to anything.

Sure. We can do the Seneca Language Supplement lessons (which I suggested before :P ) for a start.

Oh OK, then I guess we can just start with the language supplement. Maybe I can do the other ones at the same time since there are only three of them. :P

The language supplement is rather short too, but at least it has a lot more lessons. :P

I kinda feel like Seneca is a bit hard to DIY, given the state of materials for it. What do you think?

I propose one of the following: Stick with Seneca, but you take the lead on what we cover (cause you're more versed in learning languages without textbooks), or we switch to a language that has a textbook (my recommendations are Mohawk or Cayuga).

I also think, if we go with a language that doesn't have exercises, we make up our own.

And have you gone over any lessons from the supplement yet? To be honest, I haven't. :P

Wait, so what are you doing for Seneca these days now? :hmm: Or are you doing anything? That's kinda why I haven't been doing anything.

Mostly attending the community class and haphazardly going through the Quizlet deck. :P
