Mohawk Mini-Lessons

Postby księżycowy » 2010-12-18, 20:20

Ok, this is based on Struth's great idea of 'Sentence of the Week.' I just decided to rename it 'Mini-Lessons' for the hell of it.

I'm not going to go over pronunciation at this point (which might seem strange, but I want to see what activity level we get first). Plus Mohawk pronunciation is not that hard (in my opinion anyway). If you guys want a pronunciation guide just let me know!

The lay-out of this should be pretty self-explanatory, but just in case:
I'll post a sentence with a (literal) gloss of the sentence in English. And I might post some notes if I feel it necessary.

Anyway, time for our first sentence!
We'll start by looking at the 'bound' pronouns that exist in Mohawk, starting with the subjective pronominals. It will also demonstrate the imperfective (or habitual) suffix. I’ll abbreviate imperfective as ’IMP.’

kató:rats.
I-to be a hunter-IMP

Time for a new sentence!

We'll keep the same stem as to learn more of the prefixes:
rató:rats.
He-to be a hunter-IMP

Almost forgot to post a lesson this week . . .

I think we'll review what we've done thus far with the pronominal prefixes:

k- 1st person; consonant, vowel stems
r- 3rd person masc.; vowel stems
ra- 3rd person masc.; consonant stems
ie- 3rd person fem. (definitive); consonant, i vowel (losses i) stems
s- 2nd person; consonant, vowel (except i) stems
ion- 3rd person fem. (definitive); a stems (losses a)

I realize not all of you may understand the above explanations, feel free to ask questions at any point!
