I've tried doing that in the past, where I focus actively on a subset of languages and then passively review / keep up with the other languages I've already spent time learning. But, for some reason, I've had a hard time sticking to that approach. Maybe the problem was that I didn't have anything specifically to use for review (apart from Anki flashcards I suppose). I also think the fact that I generally don't consume too much media in my languages was a factor.

I think consuming as much Japanese media as I do, that it should work very well, in theory. I also think I was spreading myself too thin, and not focusing enough on my goals.

  • Review of Lesson 2 in「みんなの日本語」by 3A

3 Month Goals:

Could I maybe help you get through your kanji, too? Maybe we can use the Japanese study group thread for that; I could help you practice and/or learn your kanji. I'd probably learn some uses and/or pronunciations of those kanji, too, if not the kanji themselves. :)

Great. Buckle up, cause it's gonna be a crazy ride. :silly:

And that would be great. I've been really lazy about starting any kanji. :P

So, last week was a bust for the most part. Whadda ya expect though, it was the week before I went back to work, my aunt and uncle were visitng, we had a party the weekend before, it was bad hot, and I was lazy. :P

So, rolling over my goals from last week:
Weekly Goals 07/09-07/014
    Japanese
  • Learn the first 50 Kanji in The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course by Conning
  • Review Lessons 3-6 in「みんなの日本語」by 3A*

    German
  • Complete Chapters 3-4 in Begegnungen by Buscha and Szita

Also, for the most part, I've decided to focus on recognition at the point for Japanese and German. Reading skill is what the doctoral program will test. That largely doesn't effect much except kanji, which although I'll sprinkle in some writing practice, I'll largely be focuing on how to read them. (Plus, I expect after, idk, the first 100 or so kanji I'll be able to accurately guess how to write any new kanji I learn anyway).

  • Review Lessons 3-6 in「みんなの日本語」by 3A*

    German
  • Complete Chapters 3-4 in Begegnungen by Buscha and Szita

(Additional Goals:
    Seneca
  • Quizlet deck

    Irish
  • Review Lessons 1-4 in Teach Yourself Irish by Dillon and Ó Cróinín
  • Work on Lessons 1 &2 in Colloquial Irish)

Ok, so some stuff happened (good and bad) that kinda dug into my language study time, but I'm hopefully back for a good long while now!

So, my goals:

Weekly Goals 08/15-08/25
    Japanese
  • Learn the first 75 Kanji in The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course by Conning
  • Review Lessons 3-10 in「みんなの日本語」by 3A
  • Start Lesson 11 in「みんなの日本語」by 3A?
  • Translate the first reader in the Ask Publishing Level 0 Volume 1 set
  • Write a narrative about myself or my town and complete the first composition assignment in the MnN composition workbook

    German
  • Complete Chapters 3-6 in Begegnungen by Buscha and Szita
  • Translate the first couple poems and short prose pieces in First German Reader edited by Steinhauer
  • Write a narrative about myself or my town

    Seneca
  • Get caught up on the class material
  • Keep up with Quizlet decks

I've expanded them a bit as I'm giving myself a bit more time than usual, staring mid-week and all.

And yes, Vijay, I know I haven't posted my translations or narratives to my threads in the German or Japanese subforums yet. :P

I also want to say that, regrettably, I'm not going to be able to keep up with the Biblical Hebrew or Irish study groups. I'll still read the progress of the others and say something were I can, but I'll have to return to both of those languages later, after I have a solid foot-hold in Japanese and German.

I'm kidding. I've just gotten lazy again, but I started doing some flash cards during breaks at work. Mostly MnN and kanji (as I don't have any complete lists for Begegnungen yet! :hmpf: ).
