I have no idea what Karavinka or Yasna are talking about (and am very cautious of what Google Translate produces).
But anyway.....

linguoboy wrote:As for the translation, I would have preferred bhí as well, but as księżyc rightfully points out, the copula is acceptable too (although with slightly different syntax) and I grokked the reference immediately. I wonder if there isn't a fixed phrase from An béal bocht that might work here. Caithfidh mé cinntiú...

What different syntax are you referencing? I'm curious.

As the example from TYI shows (is breá an lá é), the tendency here is to prepose the adjective to the noun.

Personally, I would probably have gone with a cross between kevin's ultimate suggestion and your revised version, i.e. "Ba dhorcha gharbh an oíche a bhí ann..."

K: It's OK, nobody in the right mind would learn Japanese.

Y: I wanted to call it bullshit, but on second thought, maybe it's as you say.

K: Of course the above comment includes me being not in the right mind.

As for the ordinary people, when they want to learn a language for a job or for their future career, they'd go for English first and then get to something like Chinese or Spanish. Unless you are of Japanese descent or have otherwise some personal tie with Japan, why would some foreigner even bother studying Japanese... well, when you think about it, it's probably the otaku thing.

Well, there might be people who learn any language like us here, but the language otakus like us are not quite right in our heads from the ordinary people's point of view either. I'm not saying that's particularly bad, but it's probably better to at least acknowledge it.

Good luck ⑨

Oh, good. Then it was nothing new. But apparently via your version, I forgot the lenition?

ありがとうございます。My otaku level Japanese is not the strongest yet. :P

I'll admit to having a strong interest in anime and manga, but that's far from the whole tale. It's not simply some otaku thing, but at this point only Vijay knows the full story. And I think it'll stay that way. :P

I have to say, I have been entrusted with some juicy secrets on UniLang (and especially outside UniLang!) over the years. I continue keeping them (maybe I've even forgotten some already...) even though I still think every single one of them is actually very innocent.

What causes the lenition of "gharbh"? Is this still from "ba", even though there is a word between them?

You're laughing, having wicked thoughts, winking at me just to make sure I know you're just joking about the wicked thoughts part, and noting what a silly combination of emoticons that is?

Maybe.

But what does it mean in context? If that is indeed the case...

I think "maybe" is my favorite English word. :P

And to tell you the truth, I don't remember what I meant anymore.
