Thanks, I'll have to check that out later.

I'm actually thinking of putting that story on hold, and starting up a graded reader series that has audio. Can't remember what it's called, I'll have to look it up again.

I'm trying to convince my cousin to buy it for me for Christmas.

I'm not sure any of my cousins has ever bought me anything for Christmas since I was like nine?

In case anyone is interested, it's this:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E6%9C%97%E8%A ... 872177118/

I don't think it's too much to ask for 3,000¥. :P

EDIT: Although, I also notice this (newer?) series (by the same publisher?):
https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%81%AB%E3%8 ... 4469222496

I'll probably still go with the first series though, as they seem slower paced (i.e. doesn't jump from level 0-2 in one volume), and it has audio (which it seems the second series doesn't). Though I could see getting both as I move long, depending on their contents (as in, they don't have the same stories).

Less than 25 bucks? As this guy I knew in grad school once said about finding a cheap book on K'iche' in Guatemala once, "Don't mind if I do..."

Well, my cousin couldn't seem to deal with the aspects of an international purchase (you know, having to call the bank, putting in his address, etc.), so I caved and found it on Amazon.com instead. It was about 30$.
I usually guesstimate 1000 yen to be about 10 USD.

Doesn't shipping and handling cost a lot more, though?

Well, from anywhere, really. My understanding is that's how Amazon makes all its money; they list a reasonable price "plus shipping and handling," then charge you a fuckton for shipping and handling (IME at any rate).

The way Amazon makes all of its money from me is by offering FREE shipping for purchases above a certain amount and then pricing the books I want just under the qualifying sum so that I end up buying a whole other book that I wasn't really intending to just to save the $5.

For Amazon US, I have prime, and I honestly think k I've more than gotten my money's worth. It's usually only 3-4$ otherwise.

From Japan, it's usually approximately 10$. Which usually gets it to me in about a week. So I think that's reasonable, considering where it's coming from and how quickly it comes.

If you send the books to an Amazon Locker (if they exist in your area) it's usually free.

I sometimes order stuff from Book Depository as well. They offer free worldwide shipping (they're based in the UK). Of course they dilute shipping costs in their book prices, but most of the time it's still cheaper than Amazon. Not sure if it's worth it for someone in the US, though.

I've ordered stuff from them before, mostly used. They're not really competitive with Amazon on new publications once you figure in Amazon's discounts.

They also have a less than 90% positive rating for their US operation. I generally don't order from anyone whose rating isn't within a few points of 100% unless there are really no other options.

For used books, BetterWorldBooks also offers free worldwide shipping. But it's slow... very slow.
