Watched a short, silly video in Spanish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zra7Lprs12k

Thinking I'll watch Jagga Jasoos this weekend. It's been a while since I've had any listening practice in Urdu.

Read a short piece (¿Por qué se habla tan mal inglés en España?) in Spanish, for whatever reason.

New vocab
tartamudear - to stutter, stammer
torpe - hopeless; awkward
se me da fatal hablar - I'm terrible at speaking
sí ó sí - no matter what
quedarse en blanco - to draw a blank, go blank
cole - primary school, elementary school
a mi entender - to my understanding, in my understanding

Se habla mal el inglés en España, por la misma razón que se habla mal el checo o el húngaro en España. Y también por la misma razón que se habla mal el francés o el italiano en Estados Unidos. Porque no lo necesitamos para nuestra vida diaria en el país.

Lo siento, pero no he podido evitar reaccionar al artículo. Estoy harta de que pseudo-profesores de inglés se permitan juzgar las capacidades lingüísticas de todo un país, y sus causas, cuando posiblemente ellos mismos no estén mucho más allá :hmm:

O aquí no debería llevar tilde. La conjunción ó sólo lleva tilde cuando se encuentra entre números para deferenciarla del cero: 7 ó 9, 3 ó 2.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo. Calificaría esta manía por el inglés, según la cual no dominarlo al cien por cien casi equivaldría a ser analfabeto, de imperialismo o elitismo lingüístico. Y eso lo dice un anglófono nativo. :)

Eskandar Bhai, I think maybe you've mentioned this somewhere before, but what kind of literature do you have to read in Italian? Is it connected in some way to your studies of Islamicate languages?

No hay que ofrecer una disculpa; estoy contigo 100%. No compartí el articulo porque me gustó, sino que lo encontré por azar y resulta que lo leí (sobre todo porque es corto).

¡Me lleva! De hecho lo sabía... Hace mucho tiempo tenía una profesora que exigía a quienquiera que cometiera un error con los accentos escribirlo todo de nuevo. ¡Así aprendí nunca cometir errores de ortografía! Pero este error fue del autor, yo nomás lo copié :para:

Yeah, basically I need to read a bunch of stuff by Alessandro Bausani which hasn't been translated.

Progress update: finished disc 6 of MT Italian. Watched Jagga Jasoos which wasn't great, but was good Urdu practice nonetheless.

Yeah... That's what I get for not reading anything about a movie before watching it! I liked the song from it "Ulloo ka Patha" that was posted in the Hindi/Urdu songs thread, so I downloaded the movie.

To be fair, that's kind of like what happened with the last Malayalam movie I watched (in bits and pieces). I've known the songs from it for years, and I read about the plot on Wikipedia. It sounded pretty bad already, but I was curious about just how bad it was, and...yeah, it's pretty awful. :P It's a little overhyped because it was Mohanlal's first major movie (in fact, all three of the lead actors were brand-new to the Malayalam movie industry).

I'm really bored with Duolingo and Michel Thomas. I need something new to do with Italian. I might just try to jump into the Italian readers I have and look up lots of words. I also haven't had the time/motivation to work on Arabic, but I should try to get back to the Kalila wa Dimna reader.

Arabic: Watched The Insult ( قضية رقم ٢٣), a Lebanese film. Colloquial Arabic is weird because there can be a moment where I perfectly understand everything, followed by moments where I can hardly catch a single word I know. I enjoy reading/studying fuS7a much more than colloquial, but I really wish I could function better when talking to people, so I have to work on colloquial as well. I should get back to watching those Spoken Arabic Simplified videos.

Italian: Read my first short story in Italian. No dictionary, just underlined the words I didn't know and couldn't figure out from context. There were way less underlined words in the end than I expected, which was encouraging. I'm going to try to read one story per night before bed, and look up the underlined words the following day.

Hebrew: Haven't made much progress on vocabulary acquisition since I last posted about it - only about 100 new words. 200 to go to hit 2000 by June. Going to pick up Assimil again.

I've started translating Wikipedia pages - it's been a fun way to practice languages while doing something that I feel like is productive beyond my own language learning. I've translated a handful of pages from various languages into English and created (or expanded) English-language Wikipedia pages. I'd like to also write or edit in my target languages, but haven't done so yet - the barrier there is that the process of creating a new Wikipedia page in a foreign language is confusing (you have to know the names of all the tags and categories and stuff in that language, which is otherwise useless knowledge I'm not motivated enough to figure out).

Italian: Not sure I'll continue with the graded reader. It was fun at first, but now reading the insipid stories for learners has gotten old, and I'm ready to move on to native materials, even though they're still far above my level. Planning to jump into reading the works of fin de siècle Italian Orientalists soon.

Hebrew: Binged on the second season of Shtiesel and got a lot of vocab out of it in addition to listening practice. Now I need to figure out if some of these words/expressions I noted are usable, or restricted to ultra-Orthodox Yiddish speakers.

Italian: I finally felt brave enough to abandon my reader (Short Stories in Italian - which I nevertheless read more than a quarter of) and jump into reading academic Italian, and it's been really fun so far! Even though that's my main goal, I'll keep working my way through some grammars and Michel Thomas on the side as well. After Michel Thomas I'll do Pimsleur as well; it's not as helpful for reading, but this summer I'll go to Italy for a short trip and it would be good to have the basics of speaking down.

Duolingo - completed course
TY Essential Italian Grammar 9/22
Michel Thomas 8/10

Arabic: More than halfway done with reading Tales from Kalila wa Dimna, which I'm still slowly plugging away at.

You already know that I am also slowly plugging away at Kalila wa Dimna, but I am nowhere close to halfway. :P (I'm hoping it helps that the longest story in the series is also mostly made up of dialogue, though, even if it is dialogue in MSA rather than Damascene Arabic or whatever ).

Btw I think our Persian study group is helping me to the point where, like, you know those paintings with Persian manuscripts on them? I feel like I can read them now! :o I don't think I ever imagined those texts would strike me as being that easy to decipher.

That's awesome! If you ever want to work on trying to decipher Persian manuscripts (even just a bit at a time), I would be super into it - that remains the most challenging (and rewarding) task for me in Persian.
