How would you go about learning Cheyenne? I've wanted to learn Cheyenne for years, but was always frustrated by the lack of a textbook. Maybe with my venture into Seneca I'll pick up a way to learn it, but I'm still very curious of your thoughts.

I think I'd start with the grammar this time.

I knew you'd say something like that.

vijayjohn wrote:Personally, I would do Tlingit first, just because it's part of a much, much bigger family than (what we know of) all the others and thus a seemingly good place to start when it comes to NAILs. This is the same reason why I'm doing an Algonquian language. It's like how the first European language I studied aside from English was French (or Russian, depending on who you ask ), not Hungarian or Basque!
Wait, my turn to do what? You mean to pick a language for you?
księżycowy wrote:Interesting, so you're saying do a big language family (like Athabaskan, or Algonquin), rather than a small family (like Iroquoian or whatever)?
I also emailed some people from the Southern Cheyenne tribes. I'm not saying that's going to go anywhere, but it was worth a shot. I don't see much of a difference in learning Northern or Southern Cheyenne really.
So, I think either Tlingit or Cheyenne are the major contenders. The thing that makes me cautious of Tlingit (or Northern Athabaskan) is the verb complexity. I mean, I know that Cheyenne is no walk in the park itself, but Tlingit is like Super Extreme Hard Mode. (Ok, I might be exaggerating a tiny bit. )
