Başlangıc Yenilik (Inaugural Update, 31 Dec. 2016)

[flag=]az[/flag] Birinci tapşırığım kimi bir BBC Azəri məqaləsini ingiliscəyə (bu rəngdə) tərcümə edib bu söhbətlikdə həm əsil məqaləni (bütün şəkilləri, şəkilaltı imzalarıyla) həm də tərcüməni əlaqələndirəcəyəm.

[flag=]en[/flag] As my first assignment I will translate a BBC Azeri article into English (in this color) and post both the original article (together with all its images and captions) and the translation on this thread.

İsrail yəhudi məskənləri barədə səsverməni təxirə salıb (Dekabrın 28-ci günü, 2016 ildə nəşr etdirmişdir)
A vote on Israeli Jewish settlements has been postponed (Published on 28 December 2017)

(Aşağıda: Beynəlxalq qanunlara əsasən məskənlər qanunsuzdur, lakin İsrail bunu qəbul etmir)
(Below: According to international laws, the developments are illegal, but Israel denies that)

Şərqi Qüds şəhərinin işğal altında olan ərazilərində yəhudi məskənləri üçün təxminən 500 yeni evin tikilməsinə icazə verəcək səsvermə şəhər hakimiyyəti tərəfindən təxirə salınıb.
A vote has been postponed by city authorities that would have allowed for the construction of approximately 500 new Jewish settlements in areas of South Jerusalem under occupation.

Deyilənlərə görə, bu qərar baş nazir Benyamin Netanyahunun ofisindən gələn xahişdən sonra verilib.
According to statements, this decision was made at the request of the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Qərar həmçinin ABŞ (=Amerika Birləşmiş Ştatları) Dövlət Katibi John Kerry-nin İsrail-Fələstin münaqişəsi barədə çıxışından bir qədər əvvəl qəbul edilib.
The decision was approved shortly before US Secretary of State John Kerry's speech on the Israel-Palestine conflict as well.

Fələstin ərazilərində yaşayış məskənlərinin salınmasına son qoymağa çağıran BMT (=Birləşmiş Millətləri Təşkilatı) Təhlükəsizlik Şurasının qətnaməsi cümə günü ABŞ qəbul edilib.
A UN Security Council resolution was passed on Friday in the US that called to put an end to the encroachment on residential dwellings in Palestinian areas.

Washington bundan əvvəl bənzər qətnamələrə veto qoyurdu.
Before that, Washington had put in place a veto on similar resolutions.

ABŞ-ın səsverməyə müdaxilə etməmək qərarı cənab Netanyahunu qəzəbləndirib, və çərşənbə axşamı günü onun sözçüsü qətnamənin hazırlanması və qəbul edilməsində Ağ Evin iştirakı barədə məlumat əldə etdiyni bəyan edib.
The United States' decision not to intervene on the vote infuriated Mr. Netanyahu, and on Friday his spokesperson stated that he had come across information that the White House was involved in the resolution's preparation and implementation.

ABŞ dövlət departamentinin sözçüsü iddiaların "qətiyyən doğru olmadığını" deyib, lakin qətnamənin İsrailə xəbərdarlıq olacağına ümid bəslədiyini bildirib.
The spokesperson for the US State Department said that the allegations were "patently false", but stated that he had high hopes that Israel would take the news well.

Öz növbəsində yeni seçilmiş ABŞ prezidenti Donald Trump İsrailə "möhkəm olmasını" tövsiyə edərək twitter-də Obama administrasiyasını İsrailə "nifrət və hörmətsizliklə" yanaşmaqda günahlandırıb.
In his own fashion, President-Elect Donald Trump blamed the Obama Administration for treating Israel "with hate and disrespect" in a Twitter post recommending Israel to "stay strong".

Qüds şəhərinin Planlaşdırma və Mənzillə Təminat Komitəsi Ramat Şlomo və Ramot məskənlərində 492 yeni evin tikilməsi barədə səsvermənin keçiriləcəyinə işarə etmişdi.
Jerusalem's Planning and Housing Safety Committee affirmed that the vote on constructing 492 new houses in the Ramat Shlomo and Ramot settlements will be passed.

Lakin çərşənbə günü, planlaşdırma komitəsinin üzvü Hanan Rubin səsvermənin təxirə salındığını bildirdib.
But on Wednesday, planning committee member Hanan Rubin stated that the vote was postponed.

Cənab Rubin BBC-yə deyib ki, səsvermənin təxirə salınma qərarı cənab Kerry-nin çıxışından bir neçə saat öncə Washington-la münasibətləri daha da gərginləşdirməməyə görə baş nazirliyinin xahişindən sonra qəbul edilib.
Mr. Rubin told BBC that, a couple of hours before Mr. Kerry's speech, the decision to postpone the vote was accepted at the request of the Prime Ministry in order to not strain relations with Washington. :?:

"Yerusəlimdə (Qüds şəhəri) siyasi səsvermənin qarşısını almaq bizim maraqlarımıza daxildir, ona görə ki, Yerusəlim İsrailin ətrafındakı məskənlərdən fərqlidir", o deyib.
"It is not in our interests to go against the political vote in Jerusalem, because according to him, Jerusalem is different from the settlements throughout the rest of Israel," he said. :?:

"Biz əlverişli evlər və gənc ailələr üçün evlər yaradırıq...və bu gün Kerry-nin çıxışı vaxtı böyük fırtına olsa da, biz bu mübahisənin qabağını almaq istəyirik."
We are committed to favorable houses and houses for young families…and even if there was a big storm at the time of Kerry's speech, we want to face this controversy head-on.

Çərşənbə günü baş verəcək çıxışında cənab Kerry-nin İsrail-Fələstin münaqişəsinin həlli üçün öz fikirlərini ortaya qoyması və İsrailin Obama administrasiyasına yönəli tənqidlərə cavab verməsi gözlənilir.
It is expected for Mr. Kerry to put in the center his own thoughts on a solution to the Israel-Palestine confilct in his speech that will happen on Wednesday, and for Israel to reply to its disagreement towards the Obama administration. :?:

Fələstin lideri Mahmud Abbas deyib ki, qətnamə Fransada yanvarın 15-i keçiriləcək Yaxın Şərqdə sülh konfrasına "yol açır".
Palestine leader Mahmud Abbas said that the resolution "opens a path" to the Peace in the Near East Conference that will take place in France on 15 Jan.

"Biz ümid edirik ki, işğala son qoymaq üçün mexanizm və cədvəl bu konfransda yaradılacaq", o partiyasının bazar ertəsi günü keçirilmiş iclasında deyib.
"We hope that a mechanism (=plan) and schedule to put an end to the encroachment will be created at this conference," he said at an assembly of his party that took place on Monday.

[flag=]az[/flag] Bütün türkcə danışanlara, tələbələrə də yuxarıda tərcümələrin başa saldırdığım düzəltməyə çağırıram. Ağlımın sola-genişlənən sintaksisə alışmadığıma görə, hər bir mətn hissəsi tərcümə etdirilmək üçün ümumiyyətlə bir saatın yarısı lazımlıydı.

Həmçinin, Anki sözdəstəmdə qabağa çatdığım iş barədə bir qədər təzələməyi istəyirəm. Başladığım vaxtımdan bəri ancaq bir həftə keçmiş, 1’ci Vahiddən, 7’ci Vahidəki sözdəstəsində maddələrin üçdə-iki-hissəsini axı ağlımda yenilədim (9’cuna qədər çatırdım, toxunulmamış digər üç qalır). Beləliklə, bu yatan türkcə sözlərin hamısını yenidən fəaliyyətə başladığıma görə, bugünkü bacarıq səviyyəmə daha heysiyyət verməsindən vadar olmuşam.

(The underlined words are ones that I made up on the spot.)

[flag=]en[/flag] I highly encourage all Turkish speakers, as well as learners, to correct my interpretation of the above translations. I needed about half an hour on average to translate each individual passage, since my mind is still unaccustomed to left-branching syntax.

Also, I wanted to update a little about where I'm at in my Anki deck. It's only been a week since I began and I've already refreshed ⅔ (two thirds of) all items on the deck, those from Units 1-6 (out of a total of 9 that I had reached, and another 3 untouched)! So I felt compelled to give my current proficiency level a little more credit, now that I'm starting to reactivate all this dormant Turkish.

I wonder to what extent this language differs from Standard Turkish in Turkey as far as grammar is concerned.

Obrigado!

Of course there are differences, but their grammar is basically shared, with the exception that a few Turkic elements in Azeri have shifted semantically (or the other way around). I'm basically able to read Standard Turkish at this stage armed with nothing more than a dictionary. The corrections I'm looking for are more in the realm of morphology and syntax.

Michael, your achievements with Azeri are so impressive they're making me want to go through the Öztopçu book and revive my dormant skills in the language. These might not be the kind of corrections you were looking for, but a couple of things popped out to me:

Michael wrote:[flag=]az[/flag] Iranian Turkish (known as ‘Azerbaijani’ for political purposes) (türkcə, İran türkcəsi [‘azərbaycanca’])

AFAIK "İran türkcəsi" and "azərbaycanca" are never used by Iranians, and I don't think they are much used in the Republic of Azerbaijan, either. In Iran the most common terms are simply "تورکی", "آذری", etc., though you can also find "تورکجه" and "آذربایجان تورکجه‌سی" in writing. In the Republic, of course, the standard term is "Azərbaycan dili".

Michael wrote:Şərqi Qüds şəhərinin işğal altında olan ərazilərində yəhudi məskənləri üçün təxminən 500 yeni evin tikilməsinə icazə verəcək səsvermə şəhər hakimiyyəti tərəfindən təxirə salınıb.

Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Ruhlandırıcı sözlərinə görə çox sağ ol, lakin internet lüğəti əlçatan olmasaydı, tərcümə olunmağı lap bacarmamışam! Türk dillərinin morfolojisi ilə hələ də çox çətinliyim vardır, və "gerçək həyatda" öz fikrimi əks etdirməyə bilmirdim! (I hope I'm at least using the verbal suffixes correctly.)

AFAIK "İran türkcəsi" and "azərbaycanca" are never used by Iranians, and I don't think they are much used in the Republic of Azerbaijan, either. In the Republic, of course, the standard term is "Azərbaycan dili".

It was a while back that I explained my ideological preference for the terms I use for the languages, so you may not have known that, but it's always been confined to my writings on this forum. I purposely call Azerbaijani "Iranian Turkish", despite it feeling a little awkward, because I feel it better describes its historical relevance. Also, I'm generally in favor of replacing Russian loanwords with Perso-Arabic or Turkic loanwords, finding or creating alternatives whenever the need arises. If were in the Republic of Azerbaijan, I would obviously feel compelled, however reluctantly, to use them to just not sound more foreign that I'd already sound.

I forgot that the +cA suffix is only used adverbially in Azerbaijani (and not also nominally as in Turkish). I will update that.

Şərqi Qüds şəhərinin işğal altında olan ərazilərində yəhudi məskənləri üçün təxminən 500 yeni evin tikilməsinə icazə verəcək səsvermə şəhər hakimiyyəti tərəfindən təxirə salınıb.

[/quote]
That would make a lot more sense! It wouldn't be the first time I confuse the Arabesque cardinal points. I think it's the same pair I confused when I was starting out studying Persian.

As a person who never studied Azeri, I'm definitely not able to read it, neither make corrections in your translation. Infact I do understand spoken Azeri -- I had many talks here in Minsk where another person would talk in Azeri and I would talk in Turkish and we understood each other just fine -- but reading a formal article is a totally different beast.

The easiest trick for me to understand formal written Azeri is to copy paste it to Google Translate and choose the "Azeri-Turkish" translation direction. It seems to do the translation directly (not via English, as with most other language pairs), so the syntax remains untouched, only the words and word formation suffixes are changed.

Here is an example:
Azeri
Şərqi Qüds şəhərinin işğal altında olan ərazilərində yəhudi məskənləri üçün təxminən 500 yeni evin tikilməsinə icazə verəcək səsvermə şəhər hakimiyyəti tərəfindən təxirə salınıb.

Turkish, due to Google Translate
Doğu Kudüs şehrinin işgal altındaki topraklarında Yahudi meskenleri için yaklaşık 500 yeni evin inşa edilmesine izin verecek oylama şehir yönetimi tarafından ertelendi.

To me it looks a perfectly grammatical and understandable Turkish sentence.

I applied this trick to the article that you posted, and your translation looks valid. I noticed just two things that didn't match with the Turkish translation:
Öz növbəsində yeni seçilmiş ABŞ prezidenti Donald Trump

You translated öz növbəsində as "in his own fashion", but Google translates it to Turkish as "buna karşılık" which rather means "in return".

"Yerusəlimdə (Qüds şəhəri) siyasi səsvermənin qarşısını almaq bizim maraqlarımıza daxildir, ona görə ki, Yerusəlim İsrailin ətrafındakı məskənlərdən fərqlidir", o deyib.

Google translates it just as "çünkü" (as opposed to your "because according to him").

[flag=]en[/flag] In my next post I will read another interesting BBC Azeri article and post what I come up with in translation here!

Anadolu Türkçesinden aynıca düşünüyorum! Biraz konuşup yazabiliyorum, müziğini de tüm severim, ama Türkçe makalelerini okumak yaman zordur!

Wow, I didn't know that about the GT Azeri<>Turkish template, thanks! That may prove to be helpful in me being able to learn Turkish alongside Azerbaijani.

The extent of his changes go deeper than I used to believe! That must be why it's still so hard for me to produce anything complicated in Turkish (not that Azeri is a walk in the park for me [yet] or anything).

[flag=]az[/flag] İsrail polisi korrupsiya araşdırması çərçivəsində baş nazir dindirib (Yanvarın 3’cü günündə, 2017 ilində nəsr etdirmişdir)
Prime minister has been interrogated in an Israeli police corruption sting (Published on 3 January, 2017)

¶ İsrail polisi korrupsiya ittihamları ilə bağlı araşdırma çərçivəsində baş nazir Benyamin Netanyahunu dindirib.
PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been interrogated on account of Israeli police corruption accusations in a closed investigation.

Ədliyyə nazirliyi rəsmiləri, daha ətraflı məlumat vermədən, onun "biznesmenlərdən mənfəət qazanması" barədə sorğulandığını deyiblər.
Justice department officials have said that he was inquired about "earning proceeds from businessmen," according to more detailed reports.

Bazar ertəsi günü evinə təhdqiqatçıların gəlməsindən əvvəl, cənab Netanyahu günahsız olduğunu bir daha təkrarlayıb.
After investigators came to his house on Monday, Mr. Netanyahu stated his innocence once more.

O media və siyasi rəqiblərinə "hələ bayram keçirməyin" deyərək xəbərdarlıq verib və əlavə edib ki, "heç nə olmayacaq, çünki heç nə yoxdur".
He advised media and political opponents, "Don't celebrate," and added that "nothing will come of this, because there is nothing at all [to see]."

Cənab Netanyahunun Qüdsdəki evində keçirilən soruğulanma təxminən üç saat çəkib Jerusalem Post qəzeti deyib.
The newspaper Jerusalem Post stated that the inquiry at Mr. Netanyahu's Jerusalem home lasted about three hours.

Qəzet yazıb ki, baş nazir yerli və xarici biznesmenlərdən minlərlə ABŞ dolları dəyərində "düzgün olmayan hədiyyələri" qəbul etməkdə ittiham olunur.
The newspaper wrote that the PM was accused of accepting thousands in US dollars of "unjust gifts" from local and foreign businessmen.

¶ Bazar ertəsi günü cənab Netanyahu öz Likud partiyasının millət vəkillərinə müraciət edib: "Biz mediada deyilənləri eşidirik. Biz televiziya studiyalarında və muxalifətin koridorlarında bayram ab havasını görürük və eşidirik."
Mr. Netanyahu retorted to the national attorney of his own Likud party on Monday: "We can hear what's being said in the media. We can see and hear the air of celebration in the TV studios and opposition vestibules."

"Mən onlara bayramı qeyd etməyi gözləmələrini demək istəyirəm. Tələsməyin... siz isti hava şarlarını doldurmağa davam edəcəksiniz və biz də İsrail dövlətinə rəhbərlik edəcəyik."
"I'd like to tell them not to wait to celebrate. Make haste... you will keep on blowing bubbles of hot air while we [continue to] guide the Israeli state."

Son aylar ardıcıl qalmaqallı hadisələrlə üzləşdiyinə görə, cənab Netanyahunun rəqibləri onun araşdırılmasını tələb ediblər, lakin ona qarşı heç bir rəsmi ittiham irəli sürülməyib.
Mr. Netanyahu's opponents have argued for his investigation due to his handling of continually scandalous events in recent months.

In order to prevent burnout with Azerbaijani and Turkish, and also because I want to pick up where I left off in Discovering Albanian over 5 months ago, I've started refreshing my Albanian. I've made plans with MSA as well, but I won't be able to do anything with that until at least the latter half of this year.

[flag=]az[/flag] Bir neçə Azadlıq Radiosu’nun məqalələri oxuya düşdüm! Məncə bu sayt BBC Azəri’dən olduqca dolğundur. Keçmişdə etdirdiyi kimi məqalələrin birini tərcümə edib burda müzakirəmin oxucuları üçün nəşr etdirəcəyəm.

[flag=]en[/flag] I've begun reading a few articles from Azadlıq Radiosu ("Freedom Radio"). This site is much more interesting than BBC Azeri IMO. As I've done before, I'll translate an article and publish it here for those who read my thread.

Why did you write "por que" and not "por quê"? I thought you use the accent when "why" is at the beginning of the sentence? I follow the same rule for "o que / o quê".

Eu desisti a aula, então "terminei".

No, you use the accent when que is at the end of a sentence.
