I recently found these gaming-style apps (for Android, though they may also be for iPhone) that teach Japanese and Chinese basics (as well as Korean and Hebrew). For Japanese, it teaches the kana and basic kanji. For Chinese, it teaches basic logograms plus tones. They cost about $2 US each. Well. I was saving it for my first post, but whatever. My knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and Japanese is very basic. I know some kana and a few kanji/hanzi characters, but that's about it. My plan is to learn hiragana and katakana and some kanji as well as hanzi, but my main focus is on the spoken language. Anyway, it's hard to read these languages, but it's even harder to write them, so I won't go there for now. When it comes to speaking these languages, I know some words and sample sentences, but not enough to call myself a false beginner. I think it's easier to learn to read what you can already pronounce than the other way around. To answer your question. I'll be using books mainly. Of course accompanied by audio. I think I'll start with Italian and see how it goes. Best of luck in your study!!!

Just for the record. I like chess, but it's not like I play it well. Unlike my brother, who has an international rating of around 2000 if I remember correctly.

Hehe, I find this when I interact with Italian. All I do right now is try to read what others write, on here. But I'll be going along and understand words because they're Spanish cognates. Suddenly I'll see a different word than the Spanish one, and it takes me a second to realize it's a French cognate!
