I absolutely agree. Maybe not “inevitable”, but it makes it easier to get more out of less material and push out of the C1 plateau without making studying that language your full-time job.

I’ve realised that I managed to get to C2 in Spanish and Catalan because all of my classes were in those languages for three years and I spent hours on extensive reading (on forums mostly) every day. Whereas in Poland my classes were mostly in English and I didn’t find as much stuff I wanted to read in Polish until towards the end of my stay. So I’ve definitely seen huge improvements using Anki for Serbian and Polish.

Seconded
I will return to Arabic after I finish İnce Memed. My focus has shifted to MSA (partly because there are no Syrians who I can talk to here in Antalya) and I want to do just reading for a while.

Hopefully in that amount of time, I'll catch up to you in قصص النبيين.

Yes, I got my bachelor’s degree at the University of Barcelona.

I don't have much time these days for reading -- super busy with work again, also working on weekends -- but I go to the beach every day before work and take the book with me, and read a few pages, so I am slowingly advancing. I am at page 103/436.

Last two weeks were very intensive, I just worked and slept. Luckily, I am on a 2-week vacation since today! My parents are coming tomorrow to visit me here in Antalya.

I've been thinking recently about ordering a couple of books for Egyptian (the Kallimni series maybe?) and indulging into them for a while. :ohwell:

Well, every Arabic learner eventually starts wanderlusting for every (at least major) dialect sooner or later...

My parents stayed with me for 2 weeks and I didn't do much with languages. I'm half way through İnce Memed, and I'll finish it in a week or two. Then I'll probably continue doing something for Arabic.

EDIT: And I just found that someone read all four İnce Memed novels and put them on youtube

I finished İnce Memed yesterday. And if I remember right, it became the first long (about 450 pages) novel I read in Turkish. (I read a few collections of stories and short novels before, and started a few longer novels but never finished them).

What's next? I consider reading Bir Ömur Nasıl Yaşanır (How to live a life) by İlber Ortaylı. He's a famous Turkish academician, historian and polyglot (he speaks Arabic, Persian, I think Hebrew and a bunch of European languages).

And my learning method these days is all about reading. I will read something for Arabic and Kurdish as well.

For Arabic, I have Yasin Kitabı. It is a collection of "the most important" surahs from the Quran. It is a bilingual Turkish-Arabic edition with both word-for-word and a literary translation. I want to finish that first (I am actually half way through it), and then I will probably go back to قصص النبيين.

I don't know when I will get to Kurdish because I don't have much motivation for it these days, but when I get to it, I have the unfinished Hînker, The Little Prince, and a book with fairy tales to choose from. I wish there were readers for Kurdish, similar to how there are dozens of readers for Arabic, in Turkey, but unfortunately there are none.

I bought and started reading Bir Ömur Nasıl Yaşanır today.

Maybe we can eventually go back to doing Hînker together then! :D

I just met a group of people who spoke a language which I thought to be one of Kurdish dialects. I could recognize individual words. Luckily they were sitting next to me long enough so I could get the courage up to ask them where they were from. I asked in Kurdish:
- Hûn ji ku dere ne? (Where are you from?)
- ...? (blank faces)
- Hûn ji ku dere ne? Hûn ji Iraqê ne? (Where are you from? Are you from Iraq?)
- ...??? (blank faces again)
- Where are you from? (In English)
- Afghanistan.
- Ahhh.

So they were speaking Pashto or Dari.

That's how I would feel if I were in that situation.
