voron wrote:I just met a group of people who spoke a language which I thought to be one of Kurdish dialects. I could recognize individual words. Luckily they were sitting next to me long enough so I could get the courage up to ask them where they were from. I asked in Kurdish:
- Hûn ji ku dere ne? (Where are you from?)
- ...? (blank faces)
- Hûn ji ku dere ne? Hûn ji Iraqê ne? (Where are you from? Are you from Iraq?)
- ...??? (blank faces again)
- Where are you from? (In English)
- Afghanistan.
- Ahhh.

So they were speaking Pashto or Dari.

That's a funny story. I guess it was probably Dari, I think Pashto would probably sound a bit more different to Kurdish languages because of all the retroflex consonants and such, but who knows.

Now you have to learn every other Iranian language, including Ossetian! I'm sorry, I don't make the rules. :

That means he has to learn Persian, too! (And of course Zazaki goes without saying).

Of course, I would never approach strangers like that, but that's me.

To impress people by practicing their native languages with them, I guess. He usually made me talk to waiters in restaurants and said I should talk to them in their own languages because they'd give us faster service if I did.
