We have "thanks a thousand" in English. This is the only reason I knew "grazie mille" to be an emphatic thanks. Am I correct in saying "grazie tante" carries a negative connotation much like the exact English equivalent?

Yeah, grazie tante is often used sarcastically when someone hasn't really helped you, but actually they've done quite the opposite.

Grazie mille is the most common form, so I don't know why many courses of Italian teach mille grazie...

Hi Irusia, we actually don't really do these as a challenge anymore. At least not, as a group or forum challenge. It's more personal and individual. So you are welcome to do whatever you want for your TAC. Some don't even call it a TAC but a PLB (=Personal Language Blog). And of course, you can include whatever language(s) you want to. After all, it's your TAC. The idea is to help you stay motivated over the whole year. But there are also many who change their goals throughout the year. So, in the end, it is totally up to you!

Is it fine for me to make a TAC thread that lasts forever (or as long as I'm learning languages, if "forever" sounds uncomfortable to you)? I'm conflicted as to whether to participate or not.

I guess you could, as long as the thread didn't reach 100 pages or whatever at least. Some people have made TAC threads without ever specifying a date.

I've seen people stretch out their TACs over a few years at the very least.

I guess it just comes down to the amount of posts your thread gets.

I think most people use their TACs as a sort of language learning blog anyway, so don't worry too much about that

That's what I do. My current TAC was started in 2015 and has stretched until now.
