Total Annihilation Challenge Introduction

Postby ''' » 2010-01-02, 15:05

If you want to start TAC but don't know how, or want to make general comments about the challenge not specific to any year, post here. If you want to make comments specific to a particular TAC, post in the relevant thread.

As some of you may know (and I recently learned) HTLAL has an annual total annihilation challenge whereby forumites sign up and have exactly one year to learn whichever languages they wish (preferably two or more). Contestants keep logs and at the end of the year, the person who has acheived the most, or overcome the most or hardest boundaries, but not necessarily the person who learns to speak all their chosen languages to the highest level, wins. The victory is only nominal of course but the competitive atmosphere helps keep people on track, since one year is a long commitment to keep.

Obviously we could all go to HTLAL and do the challenge there, but since I don't like that place anymore and many people here don't have accounts over there, I was thinking we could start our own TAC.

The idea is simply to set yourself some goals and go for it for one year, tracking your progress as you go. It doesn't matter what you already know, what you acheive or how you acheive it, the important thing is that it keeps you motivated for a year (which for the langwhores among us would be unprecedented) by the end of which you should see some decent results.

Challenges technically run from 24:00:00 31/12 which is also 00:00:00 1/1 of a given year until the next new years (local times used not GMT). By NYE you should have (but don't strictly have to have) announced your participation, and the languages you plan to go with. There is no break between TAC's so plan for the next one while finishing the current one. If you want to merely extend your current TAC into the new year and no the same set of langs (or similar set) 2 yrs in a row that's fine.

You play by starting a thread and/or blog preferably named "TAC [year] - [name] [languages]" or something to that effect. There in you keep track of what you learned, any achievements you want to mention, and otherwise how far you've gotten. Other people can comment on your thread to give advice or encouragement but if you want to keep your thread all to yourself, say so in your OP and I'll moderate other ppl's comments out.

Technically there's a winner ofc, but if you finished your year, stayed focused, learned things and can honestly say you put effort into what you did and got something out of it, you won.

PONDER 1: based on the 2010 challenge, I want to see whether people think in the future we should run smaller season-long (3 or 4 months) min-TAC's (or Partial Annihilation Challenges). For more intense but shorter study to avoid the issue of unforeseen circumstances or burning out.

PONDER 2: because it's kinda fail that we ripped the whole thing off HTLAL when other sites go to the trouble of at least renaming the challenge, can anyone thing of a cool name for the 2011 challenge(s) or should we keep the TAC?

PONDER 3: how are we gonna do the judging? I asked the mods but they don;t come here often enough to keep tabs on everyone so that's not really fair. Any ideas?

Multiple season long TACs may be beneficial for people joining the challenge "late," especially if they want to participate in the context of a competitive atmosphere.

Just my suggestion cause I know I just returned to the Unilang scene a little over 24 hours ago and I noticed the TAC and thought it would be interesting to try.

Hi! I'm a new member and I'm a bit confused.

What does SAC stand for? Summer Annihilation Chalenge, maybe? If that's the case I'd love to start one, any rules I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

SAC does indeed stand for Summer Annihilation Challenge.

And there aren't really any rules you need to worry about, just start a thread here, and have fun.

Seconded. I'd love to do it on the anniversary of my starting German, but that's in three days. Can I start it anyway?

I'm thinking of trying it with Mongolian. My finals will be over, so I'll have a lot more time. I'm learning Czech already (and Japanese in school), but I'd rather start something else if I'm going to do this at all.

Yeah, of course. I don't see why not. Some people here even do just that.

[flag=]it[/flag]Quando comincerò fare questa sfida (l'anno prossimo), non so quali lingue che voglio studiare :/. Ci sono tante xD! Come decidete?

[flag=]en-ca[/flag]When i begin doing this challenge (next year), I don't which languages I want to study :/. There are so many xD! How do you guys decide?

(Essentially, I'm asking you to decide the languages for me ^^ I have a subtle case of aboulia[*] so it's better if someone chooses for me.)

I apologize for the clumpiness of this post. It's rather ugly to read, isn't it?

[*]AludiaAboulia is the inability to make decisions. Unfortunately, I also have anomia — the inability to remember words— so, it may be called adulia. (aludia seems more likely as it looks and sounds similar to "elude") (searched it up to make sure if I was right… nope)
