FUBAR Game 2018

Postby dEhiN » 2018-11-15, 3:46

Alright all, let's start a FUBAR (Fucked Up Beyond All Repair) Game for 2018.

The game is played as follows:
Person A translates the original English text into Language 1
Person B translates Language 1 into Language 2
...
Person X translates Language n back into English (and this is the resulting text)

Rules
- Once you receive the text, you will have 10 days to complete the translation into the designated target language.
- You may not use online/automated translators like Google Translate or BabelFish.
- The translation must be completed by yourself
- Failure to complete the translation within the time-frame without explanation will result in expulsion from the game.
- When you complete a translation, you need to forward the correct language version to the next person in the chain.
- Please also send a carbon-copy (CC) to me when you send it. This is important.
- You must not discuss the text with anyone else in the chain/game until the game has finished.
- Once the game has entirely finished, the results will be posted

So, if you want to participate, just reply to this thread and mention the language pairs you're willing to translate to/from. For instance:

English <-> Spanish
English -> Japanese
Spanish -> German

Important: What makes this game different from the BTG game is that you're encouraged to use languages and language pairs you're not that comfortable in. For example, you could choose a language that you've only studied for a few months, or are at only an A1 level. (This is not a requirement, and if you would rather choose a language you're comfortable, please do so.)

It won't be a long text, nothing more than a small paragraph.

Chain (bold indicates which link the chain is currently at):
English (dEhiN) -> Spanish (Car) -> Indonesian (Salajane) -> Polish (vijayjohn) -> Old English (księżycowy) -> Latin (kevin) -> English (Ser)

First question: since this is FUBAR, should we allow for more than 5 days? Say 10 maybe?

I don't really understand the question; how does the fact that this is FUBAR mean it should be more than five days? :hmm:

If we have this and the BTG going on at the same time, though, it might indeed make sense to make it more than five days.

Because presumably, if someone is translating from and/or into a language they aren't as comfortable in, they might need or appreciate the extra time to look things up, etc.

If we have this and the BTG going on at the same time, though, it might indeed make sense to make it more than five days.

That's also a factor, though I didn't think of that.

Ok, let's get crazy!
I'm willing to go either way in any of the following:
Aleut, Yupik (Alaskan or Siberian), Cayuga, Seneca, Lakhota, Lushootseed, Coville-Okanagan, Tlingit, Arapaho, Taiwanese Hokkien (in POJ), Cantonese (in Yale), Vietnamese, Polish, Old Church Slavonic, Irish, Old English (I'd offer Middle too, but that's too close to Modern it might be too easy. :P ), And maybe a few others I forgot. :silly:

EDIT: How could I forget Arrernte and Wati!

I could do Ancient/Hellenistic Greek too. Preferably from rather to.

Actually I'd be willing to give Turkmen and Uzbek a try too.

Okay, so how about this?

English (dEhiN) -> Spanish (Car) -> Indonesian (Salajane) -> Coville-Okanagan (vijayjohn) -> Irish (księżycowy) -> Latin (kevin) -> English (Ser)

I'd need a dictionary or something for Coville-Okanagan for that to work, though. :P Does one exist? Księżycowy, do you know of one?

Yes. I'm not sure it will be good enough, depending on the text though.

Arrernte?

EDIT: The only thing I'm worried about with Arrernte is that the text might have things in it that can't be translated into Arrernte. :hmm:
