Not just in a FUBAR game. The host knows the original text and sees all the intermediate translations...

In theory, the host could make the first translation.

True. I was just thinking of dEhiN wanting to participate.

That does make sense. Though I sometimes wonder how much help the translations are to the host. :P

I'll try to start a FUBAR thread later today. I take it there's been a previous one where I can pilfer the rules from? I don't mind sitting it out, though it would be fun to take part. I think I could do either the first or last translation. In some ways, I think doing the last might be more fun, because I would only have the second last translation to work with, and wherever it differs from the original text, I'd have to be true to the translation. With doing the first translation, I would naturally try to translate to preserve my intended meaning (of the initial text). At least, that's how I see it.

Sometimes I wonder what if I were to start one of these games with a passage I translated out of my grandfather's war memoirs. :P But then I don't know whether the chain of translators would work out and/or be linguistically diverse enough.

I think the first translation is more likely to introduce errors because of the target language, not because of ambiguities in the source language (i.e. English), so I don't think it actually makes a big difference in that respect if you do the first translation or someone else.

I'm not sure if we ever managed to start a FUBAR round, but I think the rules should be the same as the normal BTG ones, except that people pick languages with which they aren't very familiar.

Sorry, I think either I'm just confused or I may have been unclear about what I meant. Let me try to explain it...You see, my grandfather wrote his memoirs mostly in Malayalam. Last year (I think), I translated his memoirs into English (and edited and reorganized the parts that were already in English). I was thinking of starting/hosting a BTG (or FUBAR?) game where I provided the second person in the chain with a passage I took out of his memoirs, i.e.:

Me (English, which I had already translated from Malayalam) -> someone else -> someone else -> ...

What I'm wondering is whether that would be too big of a problem for this to work because then I wouldn't be available as a linguistic wildcard in the middle of the game, since I provided the initial text.

It's FUBAR, we're all suppose to be wildcards!

Ok, I created the FUBAR 2018 thread. Let's move all discussion about it to over there?
