What is your source for Karelian? I'm curious about this one because Proto-Finnic *
okte isn't a very widespread root and the addition of the "s" to it even less so. It's basically found only in regional and euphemistic Estonian
ott (
karu in standard Estonian, but
ott is well-known due to a popular resort town being called Otepää "bear's head" and Ott is also a personal name), Livonian
okš, Finnish
ohto and
otso (poetic/dialect forms; more standard is
karhu), Erzya
овто and Moksha
офта. And as far as I've found, that's it! In most dialects I thought the Karelian word for bear was derived from
*kontija (as a variation of
kontie,
kondie,
kondii depending on the dialect), as it is in Veps and Ludic, although I did once find a North Karelian dialect form
ottšo. So I am intrigued to find
otso for Karelian here and curious about your source, or if you know which dialect.
