Broken Translation Game 16

Postby hashi » 2012-04-18, 23:58

It's been some time since we've done one of these, especially given that the last one still hasn't completed, so I just want to see who would be interested in giving game #16 a go.

For the new people who've never participated, this game is something like the Broken Telephone (also called Chinese Whispers) game, but with texts. The idea usually, is that there are a few teams with x number of players in a chain, who race each other to have the text completed first. For example:

Team A:
Person one translates English original to French
Person two translates French to Japanese
Person three translates Japanese back to English (and this is the resulting text)

while:
Team B:
Person one translates English original to Hindi
Person two translates Hindi to Arabic
Person three translates Arabic back to English (and this is the resulting text)

...and so on. I'm hoping for 16 players in order to create two teams. If we don't reach 16, I will just have the one chain, but will start the text from both ends of the chain.

Rules
I apologise if there are a lot, just wanted to make these clear :)
- The languages you express interest in using MAY be used, so if you don't want to translate into it or from it, do NOT mention them - this will just be a pain to fix later.
- Note that everyone is automatically signed up to translate to AND from English.
- Once the sign-up deadline has passed, I will not be accepting late-comers or changes to language details - as this will cause a lot of problems once the chain is set.
- Once you receive the text, you will have FIVE DAYS to complete the translation into the designated target language.
- You may not use online/automated translators like Google Translate or BabelFish.
- The translation must be completed by yourself.
- Failure to complete the translation within the time-frame without explanation will result in expulsion from the game.
- When you complete a translation, you need to forward the correct language version to the next person in the chain.
- Please also send a carbon-copy (CC) to me when you send it. This is important.
- You must not discuss the text with anyone else in the chain/game until the game has finished.
- Once the game has entirely finished, the results will be posted in a separate thread.

I'd like to do it!

To and From: Basque, Cornish, German, Latin

Basque is of course my best of those, but I could manage the others.

I've taken note of all of your details up till now, and I have added a deadline. I'm hoping for 16 players in order to create two teams. If we don't reach 16, I will just have the one chain, but will start the text from both ends of the chain.

@Hildakojon, you may not get Basque obviously if no one else signs up who selects Basque :)

Would you guys rather do a team-based game in one direction, or a single chain in both directions (this would require being comfortable to translate TO and FROM in the same language)?

I'm good with that

to/from: BCMS, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Slovenian.

And I hope you will be stricter than the previous org(s) so that we can actually finish the game.

Oops, I meant to say I'm good with either ("team-based game in one direction, or a single chain in both directions").

Btw, what happened to the archives?

I was just thinking the other day it would be nice to have a BTG again, as I now feel confident enough to add Czech to my list (and still mess up, but whatever). Though I realise I won't get Czech if nobody else has it and that that's very likely. :(

Anyway. In both directions.
Dutch, English, Swedish, German, French, Czech, Norwegian, Danish.
The latter three will definitely give worse results, but not so bad they can't be understood anymore. I think. I hope.
Only from: Afrikaans. So ignore this if you make it in both directions.

Oh, would it be possible not to put me in the beginning of the chain? I will have more time and internet access later on.

The last time the site was attacked they were lost. I will see if I still have them on my computer somewhere.
