The acronym game

Postby Saaropean » 2012-02-12, 8:00

Rules:
  • Name and spell out a commonly used 2 or 3-letter acronym or abbreviation in any language, from any country. Explain it in English.
  • The acronym must not be from the same language and country as the one above you.
  • The acronym must not use any of the letters of the acronym above you.
  • It should be an acronym that is not understood internationally.
Example: Person 1 explains the Dutch "NV", Person 2 explains the German "bzw".

Let me start:

Hbf is German ([flag]de-de[/flag] and [flag]de-at[/flag], not used in Switzerland), short for "Hauptbahnhof". It designates a city's main railway station, as opposed to the minor stations across the city. Hamburg's central/union station, for instance, is "Hamburg Hbf" [ˈham.buɐkʰ ˈhaʊpt.baːn.hoːf].

[flag]ja[/flag] FA - short for ファイナルアンサー fainaru ansaa - "final answer", which originated from the quiz show『クイズ$ミリオネア』kuizu mirionea (Japanese version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"). Used by young people in colloquial conversations.

[flag]fr[/flag] cqfd (french : ce qu'il fallait démontrer), litterally "what was to demonstrate", used in the end of a reasoning.

N.N. seems to be known as far as I could find out at least in [flag]de[/flag][flag]fr-be[/flag][flag]nl[/flag][flag]it[/flag][flag]pl[/flag] as derived from [flag]la[/flag] nomen nescio or nomen nominandum (in [flag]pl[/flag] also explained as nazwisko nieznane) to mark an unknown author or a lecturer yet to be determined.
