[flag]ale[/flag] Kepnaghaghsiq (first month - beginning of year.) - Naukan Yupik

April

April is the time of the New Year in Inuit/Yupik/Aleut's region

"When the moon is full in April, a notch is cut to show the start of the New Year. Every time the moon is full, a new notch is cut on the same edge of the stick. When the next year comes, a new edge of the calendar stick is started. Inuit/Yupik/Aleut keep track of the months by the moon, not by the days passing. Each calendar shows the time passed for four years.

Probably has its origins in the changeover from the Julian to Gregorian calendar centuries ago.

Yeah, the confusion in the Slavic names of months has been discussed in the Multilingual False Friends thread.
