"Two - The second - The other"

Postby Varislintu » 2005-06-28, 10:00

I thought it'd be interesting to find out how many languages derive their word for "the second", from "the other" (or the other way 'round), and how many from "two" or something else entirely. Apologies if this has been translated before.

English: Two - The second - The other

Swedish: Två - Den andra - Den andra

Our word for "second" doesn't come either form "the other" or from "two" ;) It comes directly from the Latin form of the ordinal number.

depending on gender, of course.

You can also use "hinn annað" in some cases.

"eitt og hinn annað og ekkert gerist" - "this that and the other".

There are probably other idioms and usages I don't know.
