house / houselet

Postby Multiturquoise » 2022-09-16, 18:49

This thread demonstrates how to say "a little house" by adding a diminutive to the word "house", even though I think "houselet" is an obsolete word in English and "cottage" or "little house" are used instead. (Edit: thanks to Linguoboy!)

I can't find any evidence that it was ever used with this meaning in English. (Wiktionary seems to be incorrect here.) On the other hand, there is the term "houselet" which--though rare--has been attested as recently as 2010. Moreover, it's transparent to English-speakers. Since -ling is often used to form animate nouns referring to people (e.g. groundling, earthling, changeling), it's much more natural to interpret "houseling" as "someone with a house" or "someone who stays in a house" (which is one of the meanings that it actually attested in the OED.)

tl;dr: If I had to pick the most common English term for "little house", it would be..."little house". If you have to have a single word term, the most readily intelligible one that exists is "houselet".

1. Diminutives with -chen are more common in contemporary Standard German than those with -lein.
2. In the meaning "house", casa is Vulgar Latin. The Classical Latin was domus, diminutive domuncula.

Corrected Austrian German. Added Ukrainian, Swahili, Zulu.

I'm not sure how to colour-code the Swahili. Swahili has noun classes, which are considered a form of grammatical gender. The most common means of forming diminutives in Swahili is to make a noun class 7, which has the singular prefix ki-. (The base form nyumba is class 9, also known as the n-class. Although also a Bantu language, Zulu forms diminutives by means of a suffix and keeps the noun class the same.)

At first I thought it might be double diminutive. (I'm not sure if Austrian German has those, but they are historically attested for German.)

No, I was just careless. I cut-and-pasted my Bavarian text (Häusl) when I added Austrian, and apparently just added -erl without deleting the unnecessary l.

+ Finnish and South Ostrobothnian. I almost said we don't have a diminutive for house, but apparently I was just distracted by the nominative - it sounds much better to me in plural partitive (like saying "look at the little houses" rather than "this is a little house").

LOL about being distracted by the nominative. I didn't post talonen either, for the same reason I guess: I looked around to verify and compare its usage to Estonian majake and this is what I found:
Aivan toisin on laita virossa.

But, she also only looked for nominative singular forms, not partitive plural, and I found that blog article by googling the same thing (talonen + majakene).

I started with nominative singular too and, like her, found hardly anything but surnames. I almost gave up and came here to tell everyone the diminutive doesn't exist, but then I thought I should try with some other case. Plural partitive felt the most natural and the least likely to yield more surnames, and that's how I ended up finding a few examples of people seeing söpöjä talosia. :) I still think it's not the best example of diminutive in Finnish though.

:rotfl:

The word for "little house" seems to be more-often used compared to Finnish in the other Finnic/Saamic languages I posted (like it is in Estonian), or at least I found some random examples of its use:
(vot) meni tämä sihie rihikkõisõõ = he went into that little house
(vro) küläh oll tsässon, sääne väikene majakõnõ ja riśt sääl üleväh = in the village there was a chapel, such a small little house and a cross there on top
(smi-sma) Auri já Jimi päikkin lii uccâ, ovdil soođij huksejum tááluš = Auri and Jimi's home is small, before the war they built a little house
(smi-smp) dále'l gámbal dåhpe, jala almatj hållå "unna dåbátj" = now this is the old house, or as one calls it "the little house"
(smi-sms) sij raʹjje tän siõm põõrtâž tâʹlles evakko mâŋŋa = he built this little house immediately after evacuation
(not 100% about some of my translations there but I'm sure enough about the "little house" part)
