not yet | already | still | not anymore

Postby h34 » 2021-07-06, 6:03

How would you translate these sentences?

(1) The birds aren't singing yet. (possible contexts: … as it's still very early in the morning; as it's still dark)
(2) The birds are already singing. (… although it's still early in the morning; although it's still dark)
(3) The birds are still singing. (… although it's already late in the night; although it's already dark)
(4) The birds aren't singing anymore. (… as it's already late in the night; as it's already dark)

Edit: I'm never quite sure about the most natural position of 'already' in English ('already singing' or 'singing already'?) and veel/vielä in Estonian and Finnish (veel laulavad or laulavad veel? Vielä eivät laula or eivät vielä laula, or …?) Any alternative suggestions appreciated!

(da) (1) Fuglene synger endnu ikke. (2) Fuglene synger allerede. (3) Fuglene synger stadig. (4) Fuglene synger ikke mere.
(de) (1) Die Vögel singen noch nicht. (2) Die Vögel singen schon. (3) Die Vögel singen noch. (4) Die Vögel singen nicht mehr.

(ru) (1) Птицы ещё не поют. (2) Птицы уже поют. (3) Птицы ещё поют. (4) Птицы уже не поют.

(lv) (1) Putni vēl nedzied. (2) Putni jau dzied. (3) Putni vēl dzied. (4) Putni vairs nedzied.

(et) (1) Linnud veel ei laula. (2) Linnud juba laulavad. (3) Linnud veel laulavad. (4) Linnud enam ei laula.
(fi) (1) Linnut vielä eivät laula. (2) Linnut jo laulavat. (3) Linnut vielä laulavat. (4) Linnut eivät enää laula. :?:

I changed the Finnish order to what feels natural and neutral to me. You could use almost any word order but it would change the emphasis (e.g. ei(vät) linnut enää laula sounds like you're saying "don't be stupid, birds don't sing this late!" vs linnut eivät laula enää sounds more like a neutral observation that birds have stopped singing, but if it was part of a longer sentence the difference could be smaller and more about emphasing on what you think is the new information to your listener.)

(da) (1) Fuglene synger endnu ikke. (2) Fuglene synger allerede. (3) Fuglene synger stadig. (4) Fuglene synger ikke mere.
(de) (1) Die Vögel singen noch nicht. (2) Die Vögel singen schon. (3) Die Vögel singen noch. (4) Die Vögel singen nicht mehr.

(ru) (1) Птицы ещё не поют. (2) Птицы уже поют. (3) Птицы ещё поют. (4) Птицы уже не поют.

(lv) (1) Putni vēl nedzied. (2) Putni jau dzied. (3) Putni vēl dzied. (4) Putni vairs nedzied.

(et) (1) Linnud veel ei laula. (2) Linnud juba laulavad. (3) Linnud veel laulavad. (4) Linnud enam ei laula.
(fi) (1) Linnut eivät laula vielä. (2) Linnut laulavat jo. (3) Linnut laulavat yhä/edelleen/vielä/vieläkin. (4) Linnut eivät laula enää.
