When you don't stop at a stop sign

Postby Synalepha » 2020-02-20, 23:05

I'm looking for idiomatic expressions for when you completely ignore or don't realize there is a stop sign and drive on without stopping or even slowing down.

I think this will be one of those with endless variations. There are different idiomatic ways to say it and in many languages there will be one way to say it for stop signs and another for stop lights.

(en) to run a stop sign; to run a red light; to run through a red light; to run a light; to run a red; to run through a red; to blow through a stop sign; to blow through a stop light; to blow through a red light

(es) pasarse la roja (to pass the red); pasarse un alto (to pass a stop); pasarse un semáforo (to pass a traffic light); saltarse el alto (to jump the stop); saltarse el semáforo rojo (to jump the red traffic light); tragarse la luz roja (to swallow the red light)
(it) forare / bucare uno stop (to pierce a stop)

(et) punast tuld eirama (to ignore a red light); punast foorituld eirama (ignore a red traffic light); stoppmärki eirama (to ignore a stop sign)

(th) ฝ่าไฟแดง (break through the red light)

+ Finnish. There's also the phrase vanhoilla vihreillä ('with/on old greens'). It's used when you ignore the yellow light that hasn't yet turned red, whereas "to drive against reds" is used when the light was already red.
