Domplatz

Numerous cities in Europe have a cathedral as their focal point, and sometimes the square in front of it is simply named the "Cathedral Square". How do you say this in your language? If the noun has a gender, please indicate (m/f/n)

"Cathedral Square" is always a proper name in American English, as it tends not to be a feature of our cities. (Perhaps in British English as well, as I don't recall this being common in the UK either.)

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, if I were expressing the idea of the example sentence (rather than translating from the German) I would be more likely to use the native Italian term: "you shouldn't take the subway directly to the Piazza del Duomo".

"Cathedral Square" is definitely correct for English. There are several in English-speaking countries (including a few in the US). Adding Spanish and Estonian.

Serbo-Croatian: there don't seem to be any such local placenames in the Serbo-Croatian language area. Google gives several sites where Katedralni trg (adjectival construction; "cathedral.[adj.] square") is used as a translation of foreign placenames. Other sites give Trg katedrale (genitive construction; "the square of the cathedral").

Polish: As for the traditional (pre-WWII) Polish language area, there is a Plac Katedralny (note the different capitalisation convention compared to the other Slavic languages) in Tarnów and another one in Vilnius. In the modern (post-WWII) language area, there is another one in Wrocław, which presumably arose as a translation of the traditional German placename (Domplatz).

I would say that in general in English there is a marked tendency away from translating placenames, much more pronounced than in most other European languages. I remember a lot of Spaniards found it funny that the then-mayor of Madrid referred to the central square as "Plaza Mayor" in a speech in English, and I didn't have the heart to tell them that this is actually good English usage (especially in the context of advertising a European city).
