Pronouns used for God

Postby aaakknu » 2018-02-10, 14:22

It would be interesting to know what pronouns different languages use, especially if they have a T/V distinction.
If the language you add has more than two ways of distinction, please mention it.
If there are differences in usage between people of different religions or denominations, please mention them too.

Trying Dutch. At least in the northern parts of the Netherlands, U, the V-form, is the norm but I'm not sure about the usage of Gij/Ge in other parts of the Netherlands and Belgium. Perhaps someone else can add more details.

Edit: I've just come across this this article. Dutch is mentioned in the 'comments' section.

(en) You (no T/V distinction)
(en) Thou (T; archaic)
(de) Du (T)
(nl) U (V); Gij (T) :?:
(sv) Du (T)

(es) (T)
(fr) Tu (T)
(la-VA) Tu (T)
(pt-pt) Vós (V; archaic but still the preferred form for Catholics)
(pt-pt) Tu (T) (mostly Protestant churches)

(uk) Ти (T)

(el) Εσύ (T)

(et) Sina (T)
(fi) Sinä (T)
(liv) Sinā (T)

(ku) Tu (no T/V distinction)

(tr) Sen (T)

(ar) أنت (no T/V distinction)

(ml) നീ (T)
(ml) അവിടുന്ന് (V―highest honorific. Ordinary V-forms aren't used for God)

(tl) Ikaw (T, sometimes used with po)
(id) Engkau (no T/V distinction)

(hmn) Koj (no T/V distinction)
