I am a bit puzzled, however, because the Estonian-Mari Dictionary has Mari ушым пурташ as a set phrase meaning "to punish" (Estonian karistama). This seems rather different from the meaning given for the proverb.....

I think straightforward translations are difficult but how could this proverb be expressed in other languages?
