Wait... Would a tech support guy say du here? Shouldn't it be Sie? For context, the guys in The IT Crowd work in a rather posh corporation and have to answer phone calls from posh people upstairs (okay, so the basement where their IT dept is in isn't as polished, but still). Or maybe they are socially challenged techies so they would du anyone and everyone?

If you look closely, almost all languages are using the informal way of speaking.

For example all Romance languages. Okay, except French. Ladin's too weird for me to deduce anything.

Re-adding the tú version for Spanish. In a handful of work environments in Spain (like mine), 'tú' would definitely be used in these circumstances. If someone called me 'usted' inside the factory, I would certainly be shocked. IT people in the company speak accordingly.

Questions:
*1 DA-DK at tænde/slukke for (apparatet) VS at tænde/slukke (apparatet), not sure about the difference?

*2 ET-EE proovima VS püüdma VS üritama, which one is the best here? (see http://wordties.cst.dk/wordties-estwn/w ... proovima-3) I prefer proovima, no?

*3 GL-ES tentar vs probar? I think Galicians tend to use the former here? (Similarly to Portuguese, they don't have something like "perfect composed tense", but please correct me if I'm wrong.)

*4 NL-NL & FY-NL not sure whether to use "het"/"it" or "hem"/"him" but I prefer "het"/"it", although "de telefoon" is "mannelijk"..?

*5 PL-PL CS-CZ & LV-LV LT-LT I notice the imperfective aspect form for the verb "try" is more commonly used here (e.g. "próbować/zkoušet & bandyti" rather than "spróbować/zkousit & pabandyti"), but I'm not sure why. Could the perfective "Pokusil ses.." sound better?

*6 SV-SE att försöka göra ngt. OR att försöka att göra ngt.? Not sure if there are any major differences between the two but I think omitting "att" could be better.

Shanghaic means the Goetian dialect spoken in the city of Shanghai. I don't know what "Shanghainese", somethingnese or blablanese is, just as I don't know what Englese or Swedese is, and I don't know why a language in PRC has to take an -ese or even a funny -nese suffix. It doesn't have an officially standardized spelling (just as the Võro kiil' language in Estonia or the Samogitian/Yutvingian language in Lithuania, you can spell the names as Võroan, Võroish or Võroic, etc. and Yotvingian or Jutvingian etc. respectively, you name it I have it, and you can even refer to Latvian as "Lettish", Belarusian as "Byelorussian", or even refer to Dutch as "Netherlandic") and I don't think anyone can impose a non-standardized name on such languages. Shanghaic is no exception.

PS many language names in China have multiple variants, such as Hokkien vs. Southern Min vs. Taiwanese vs. Holo-ue, Teochew vs. Teosua, etc., and I don't think there are any "orthographically correct" spellings for them, just as with "Belarusian", "Sámi" or "Galician": no one can deprive me of the right to write "Byelorussian", "Saamic" or "Gallegan". I simply don't like appending an -ese suffix to a language in PRC that's it.

I don't have anything against the "-ese" suffix, but sayings like "All East Asians look the same" or "All East Asian languages are '-ese' languages" sound offensive to me, even though I don't care why in English there's no "-ish" language name for southern European languages and what logic is behind it. :hmm:

>>"Goetian" refers to a kind of mediaeval sorcery.

I was talking about Goetian but NOT Goetia which is another kettle of fish; Goetian refers to a bunch of Chinese "dialects", also known as the "Wu-Yue"/"Go-Et"(吴越/吳越) language by pinyin, and since the Wu-Yue culture consists of two subcultures, the Wu culture and the Yue culture, it is virtually incorrect to omit Yue/Et when transliterating "吴越语/吳越語" into English, plus, as the monosyllabic name "Wu" is too short to be used to represent this ever more international language, less and less people in the Goetian language circle is using this obsolete name any more. :)

Thanks,
stor

I don't know what "Shanghainese", somethingnese or blablanese is, just as I don't know what Englese or Swedese is, and I don't know why a language in PRC has to take an -ese or even a funny -nese suffix. It doesn't have an officially standardized spelling (just as the Võro kiil' in Estonian or Samogitian/Yutvingian in Lithuania, you can call them Võroan, Võroish or Võroic, etc and Yotvingian or Jutvingian etc. respectively, anything you like, and you can even call Latvian "Lettish", Belarusian "Byelorussian", or even call Dutch "Netherlandic") and I don't think anyone can impose a non-standardized name on such languages. Shanghaic is no exception.

I'm not getting your logic at all. Regardless of whether it has an official standardised form or not, the Wu dialect spoken in Shanghai has a conventional name in English, and that name is "Shanghainese". Just consult any published reference on the subject. Similarly, the Sinitic sublanguage spoken in the Yangtze Delta and its environs is universally called Wu. I think it's one thing to invent your own terminology when writing, say, a monograph, where you can take several paragraphs to explain your choices and what they refer to. But it's damn confusing to do that on a general forum.

I mean, I think it's lamentable that the language of the Cymry is conventionally called "Welsh", but I'm not about to invent some new term like *"Cymraïc" just to make a point.
