Moonshadow started this list with "Frankincense" however it was changed to just incense somewhere along the line. I'm not sure of what the difference really is, but for what it's worth, I've only ever heard Frankincense, never just incense. Perhaps it's a regional difference? I think Frankincense should either replace or be listed alongside incense on the list for English.

Seriously? How cute. :P
I checked the etymology, found the following:
Finnish: suitsuke (incense, frankincense)
Estonian: suitsuke (little smoke, dear smoke [diminutive of suits, "smoke"])
Karelian: šuittša (fog)

It's fun to see how meanings shift or become more specific. To an Estonian-speaker it sounds like they are bringing gifts of smoke; in Karelian it would be gifts of fog. :D Naava, is suitsu still used for "smoke" in place of savu in some Finnish dialects or contexts (besides incense and, apparently, the smoke of some sort of bonfire for protecting cows from bugs, lehmi satikate eest kaitsev lõkkesuits)?

Well, isn't incense just fancy smoke? :P

Naava, is suitsu still used for "smoke" in place of savu in some Finnish dialects or contexts (besides incense and, apparently, the smoke of some sort of bonfire for protecting cows from bugs, lehmi satikate eest kaitsev lõkkesuits)?

I must admit I don't know - there are way too many dialects here, and I swear every town has their own vocabularies. :S All I can say for sure is that I wasn't familiar with the word and that it isn't standard language.

Then there's also the verb suitsuttaa, which suomisanakirja.fi explains as
1) to smoke, to puff smoke
2) to burn good-smelling ingredients in the ceremons of some religions
3) to burn incense

It also has an additional meaning 'to praise excessively', but I guess that's spoken language.

Anyway, I didn't know suitsuttaa could mean 'to smoke' so it might be a regional thing.

I also googled suitsu (the smoke/bonfire for cows) and looks like you can still find the word in books at least. What was slightly scary was that one of the hits was from a book I have read but I still had no idea such a word exists before you said so... :para:

Btw, it's very likely that suitsuke comes from the word suitsu because -ke is one of the 100000 diminutives Finnish has, so you could say it means 'a little smoke' in Finnish, too. I didn't know the word suitsu so I had never thought of it, but it sounds logical and quite cute.
