Looking at the years, can it be a somewhat older form? (That's the newest Dutch lexica I have...) I suggest to put it the way I do now, but if it's not to your liking feel free to remove/change!

In our language "L" variates: sometimes it is /l/, sometimes it is /w/. For example: pepel is with /w/.

I'll explain it very clearly...

the word 'as' in Dutch has 4 meanings...

as = axle: from a wheel
as = ashes: remains of a fire
as = axis: middle-point of an object
as = as: Romian coin

We're talking about the second meaning... remains of a fire.

The etymology of this word, written by Van Dale - Etymologisch Woordenboek 1997, ISBN: 90-6648-312-1. You, should know that Van Dale is a renowned publisher of dictionaries and books about languages and especially for Dutch .

as [fire remaining] < old-Dutch asca 901 - 1000. Middle-Dutch assche > Old-High German asca.

There's no 'ash' in the whole article. Old-Dutch = asca and Middle-Dutch = assche. But 'ash' isn't new Dutch, neither Old-Dutch!

There's also no note about 'ash' in the "Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal". Better known as "het Groene boekje". It's the only official wordlist, it contains all the new spelling rules; the new spelling of bastard words and the new spelling of compounds. It contains 110.000 words and the rule of thumb is that if a word isn't listed in the 'Woordelijst Nederlandse Taal' that the dictionary of Van Dale has the right spelling. This is because Van Dale change their dictionaries more often while the 'woordenlijst Nederlandse taal' gets refreshed with a spelling reform only. I have the wordlists of 1934, 1954 and 1995; in these years Dutch had a spelling reform. In all these wordlists their's no note about 'ash'.

Ron, I hardly do not know much Dutch. But, if it is as you say, that no word asch exists, why is then apparent in two dictionaries? It may have existed in some form, somewhere, sometime... But I think this is a bit strange! Great! Now I need to go to the library tomorrow, how fun!

It seems best to exclude it from the list, but I won't satisfy my hunger of linguistic knowledge until I've heard/read an explanation of the word asch...
