In Polish it will be HERBATA, while in Lithuanian ARBATA; they both come from Latin HERBA THEA. But there is one curious thing: there is a word CZAJNIK, that is a kettle (an object related to tea!) that keeps that well known international world as a root.

more teas...

Postby bluechiron1 » 2004-10-13, 0:11

Bahasa Indonesia--teh

Guarani--ka'ay (this is more mate than tea)

**I cannot locate a word for tea in either Yucatec or Quichua, which is a likely indication that the word was borrowed from the Spanish, who brought what we refer to today as tea into the Americas. I'm unclear as to the origin of mate or coca tea, which may be native drinks.

Reorganizing languages, removing Papiamento since no translation into it was ever provided, correcting multiple language names, changing format for transliterations a bit, correcting all the Indian languages, adding their words in their native scripts, correcting some other transliterations, removing niqqud from Hebrew to be consistent with Arabic (and Persian/Dari and Urdu), and adding Persian/Dari, Tajik, and Malayalam as well as Bahasa Indonesia and Guarani from previous post

Thanks, I'm not sure how I managed to duplicate the Kyrgyz word there instead of putting the Uzbek word!

Re: CHÁ

Korean actually shows reflexes of both Chinese forms. The basic word is 차 /cha/, but the character 茶 has an alternative reading 다 /ta/ used in a few compounds, e.g. 茶房 다방 /tabang/ "teahouse".

(Interestingly, Wiktionary gives the Japanese reading of the same characters as さぼう sabō. Not sure where the initial /s/ originates.)
