Hello Everybody,

I think everybody knows "Cave Canem" is Latin for, "beware of the dog". I'm pretty curious, how you say, "beware of the dog" in other languages! Can you help me with creating a huge list?

Afrikaans: Kyk uit vir die hond
Dutch: Kijk uit voor de hond
English: Beware of the dog
Latin: Cave Canem

With kind regards,

I guess that's similar to the situation in Germany. You could say Vorsicht Hund or so, but usually it's Vorsicht, bissiger Hund! (Beware, biting dog), Vorsicht, frei laufender Hund (Beware, loose dog) or a funny variation...

GOOD LUCK!

Or check out the ones at http://www.schroeders-hundeleben.de/Schilder/schilder.html that warn people of relax, incredible, sociable, incorrupt and interested dogs. :)

Besides, you're too late Ron. Someone has already started such a collection. It's at http://www.ozaru.freeserve.co.uk/bjdogs.htm

More German...

In the Asterix comic "Zoff im Pott"("Streit um Asterix" in the dialect of the Ruhrgebiet), the offered translation of "Cave Canem" is "Nich am Hund packen".

In Faroese you'd say: Ansið eftir hundinum, although I've yet to see such a sign here.

The Danes say: Pas på hunden.
