Cave Canem in many languages!!

Postby Leviwosc » 2003-06-05, 6:38

Hello Everybody,

I think everybody knows "Cave Canem" is Latin for, "beware of the dog". I'm pretty curious, how you say, "beware of the dog" in other languages! Can you help me with creating a huge list?

Afrikaans: Kyk uit vir die hond
Dutch: Kijk uit voor de hond
English: Beware of the dog
Latin: Cave Canem

With kind regards,

Italian: attenti al cane
Se il drago rifiuta di combattere,
forse è solo pigro.
Ma se ignora la zanzara,
allora è davvero addormentato.

Romanian: atenţie la câine - beware of dog, but nobody would use that. The
usual sign says: câine rău - evil dog

I guess that's similar to the situation in Germany. You could say Vorsicht Hund or so, but usually it's Vorsicht, bissiger Hund! (Beware, biting dog), Vorsicht, frei laufender Hund (Beware, loose dog) or a funny variation...

Besides, you're too late Ron. Someone has already started such a collection. It's at http://www.ozaru.freeserve.co.uk/bjdogs.htm

In the Asterix comic "Zoff im Pott"("Streit um Asterix" in the dialect of the Ruhrgebiet), the offered translation of "Cave Canem" is "Nich am Hund packen".
