Adding French. The term for "tails", pile, doesn't lend itself to a direct translation, but I made an attempt. Based on the Académie Française dictionary, it emerged in the 12th century, possibly as an extension of pile, which also is traced back to the 12th century and at the time meant "monument". But over time, pile's architectural sense has shifted into "column" or "(bridge) pier", as well as "stack" (but looking at Wikipedia, there are also these tower-like funerary monuments currently called piles, and they date from as early as the first century?), so it's all very confusing.
