I've had wanderguilt for the languages I think I should be studying, but that's not really a compelling enough motive to restart them. The only language in the last 2 years I've had repeated wanderlust for is Italian. I'm fascinated by how much of it I can understand without ever having studied it. As Anglophones, we don't really get the opportunity to experience that kind of mutual intelligibility with another language (bar Scots, and most native English speakers don't hear Scots very often), and I've always been fascinated by what that must be like. Now I know, and it's kind of awesome. Why Italian specifically? Well, I used to know some Spanish, French and even a little Catalan, so mutual intelligibility there is not as surprising, because I can chalk it up to having studied them, and Romanian is too different, so I don't actually understand pretty much anything; Italian is just right. But I still don't think it's strong enough motivation to actually learn it...

To my surprise, there was a Portuguese girl who rapidly noticed I was also from abroad and she got very happy when I told her I was Spanish. She told me she had been feeling a bit left out since she only spoke Portuguese and some basic English. How do you guys invent that mix on the spot? I am always amazed how Arabs do this with their dialects, accomodating them according to the person they speak to.
The few times I tried to invent a Polish-Russian-Belarusian mix when talking to Poles I failed miserably. I couldn't help trying to make it the proper Polish.
